I'm sure i've missed some but for the most part...
h22a4 = 5th gen (195hp then 200hp - but really no difference in block)
h22a1 = north american 4th gen (190 hp)
h22a = jdm 4th gen (200hp) <--------most typical for swaps.
h22a s-type = jdm 4th gen (220hp)
h23a1 = north american 4th gen (160hp)
h23a = jdm 4th gen. (160hp?)
h23a vtec = jdm 4th gen (215hp?) think it was in an accord tho.
as for buying... I honestly think your best bet is to see the engine with your own eyes - it's fine to trust someone - or use ebay - but really unless you live in a really tiny tiny town and have no access - look around in the city you are in for a "jdm dealer" - go visit them in person - get compression/leak down numbers on the engine you are buying - see the engine, lift the valve cover, pull the oil filter (if it's still on) and disect the oil filter (if they let you) just cut open the metal housing trying not to make any metal flakes - rip out the inner lining spread it out on a bench and look for bits of metal or any "history" that the engine might be telling you. Pull the plugs if you have time - first swing by an autozone or some place and pick up one of those wacky sparkplug charts - compare the tips of each spark plug to the chart - it can tell you alot about what is happening inside that cylinder - was the engine run too rich? too lean? etc. Also make sure the engine hasn't been to warehoused - it's not the one that fell off the top shelf - and the oil pan isn't crushed in. For the most part engine dealers will give you a start-up warranty - and that's another reason to buy local - it might be ok to ship an engine once - but imagine if you have to ship it back to a place because of problems. Establishing a relationship with them is also good - because for example when i needed new headers/downpipe - the place i delt with let me trade my h23's straight across, same with a faulty 02 sensor, and when I *thought* i had a problem with my ecu they allowed me to try 3 different p13's in their parking lot.
buying an engine (especially one that is sitting on a warehouse floor) is a very unsure thing. so wouldn't you want to know as much about it as possible?

hey no worries - we are all new to this at some point... (;
first of all - 2.2 vtec's were never "stock" in the 1992 year. In 1992 the 4th gen preludes introductory year - the engine options were the 2.3L (non vtec) - for the SI model, and the 2.2L (non-vtec) for the S model. It wasn't until 1993 - when honda unveiled the 2.2L vtec.
By chance if you've found a 1992 with a 2.2L vtec - it means that someone else swapped that engine into the car at some point.
You'll be able to identify whether the engine is vtec or not immediatley by the valve cover - it should say DOHC, VTEC. also just to the left of the valve cover and behind the distrubutor you should be able to see a little cylindrical shaft sticking up - that is the vtec solenoid - it usually has a green wire sticking out of it.
finally the easiest way to check is to look at the flange right where the transmission mounts to the engine block, (left of headers when looking down in engine bay) there should be a stamp if it says h22a, or h22a1 you should be set. (can anyone else verify what stamp the S model 2.2L would have?)
are you sure the car isn't in the junkyard because of the engine? will they give you a startup guarantee?
best of luck.

thanx wut do you think the best and easiest swap for my car (92 accord) and wut year lude would that be in
well the "easiest" swap is always putting in the exact same engine you take out of your car (:
but the best - most common swap for your car - performance wise (and usually low mileage) would probably be a jdm h22a - i'm not well versed with what fits in accords because i've never had one - but i'm sure if you research the swap you'll find some info - h22's have definetley gone into accords before - i'm just not sure what year, and don't want to blow smoke up your arse. If your car is 92, then it will be obd1, so atleast you can stick with a obd1 p13 ecu.. visit the accord forums at honda-tech.com you'll meet lots of like minded citizens.
all the best.

1992-1996 was the 4th gen lude, and I may be wrong, but I think they were all OBD1 except the 96...anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

yeah, 96 was OBDII, but still retained the P13.

I got a jdm p13 ecu for sale for $100 if you want it. Definitely go with the jdm h22, compression is higher and fuel maps are better than us model. I just got hondata and I need to get rid of this ecu.
