SOrry, I am new to this forum. I have a 1994 Escort GT 1.8L DOHC. Recently I came to a stop sign and all of sudden the car died. Not knowing the definite problem yet, I bought a ignition tester and tested the ignition system. I got no spark, so Im assuming that the problem is ignition related. I check the Ignition coil using an Ohm-Meter and the resistance was within the Chilton's Manual specification. Checked Distributor Cap and ROtor, but aside from normal wear, I did not see any obvious problem (ie. Cracks etc). I want to check the distributor and the ignition module, but the chilton manual do not say anything about this. Can someone tell me how to check the distributor and ignition module on EGT? And if anyone had similar problem with their escort gt, please let me know what you did that fixed the problem. Thanks in advance for your help.

forgot to mention, but it is not battery related. THe car cranks but it wont fire.

check the timing belt... if it isn't turning, I don't believe that you'll be getting any spark... then it may be bad points.... I have been having a similar problem with my '95 (1.9l LX)

that I have... the weird thing is... all the fuses are ok... as well as the fusible links and relays

I checked my belts and they are all in good shape. I also checked the fuses and none of them seem to be blown. I checked my fuel pump for noise and it was making a noise when I turn on the car, so I am assuming its not fuel related problem. I will try to check if my distributor rotor and cap contacts are worn? thank you for the suggestions

I checked the contact between the rotor and the distributor cap and they seemed dirty so I cleaned them. I try to see if this fixed the problem, but still no fire. When I opened the distributor cap again, I realized that the rotor is in the same spot, so I suspected that the timing belt may not be moving. And I was correct! I took off the cam-gear/belt cover and observed that the belt does not move even when the engine is cranked. Im assuming this may be because of my timing belt too worn? Someone please guide me how I can replace the timing belt on EGT. Chilton's manual do not give a detailed description of belt removal. Thank you all for all your assistance.

Did you check the spark plug wires? Try turning over you car at night without ant lights on. If there are any faults or carcks you will see the sparks.

I started a new thread with more specific title "94 Escort GT - How to change the timing belt". Please follow up with me there. Thank you.

Thank you for your suggestion. I did check the resistance across the spark plug wires (im assuming a faulty wire would have infinite resistance???) and all of the wires have similar resistance, so Im assuming the wires not a problem.

Thats not entirely correct, but you are on the right track. However if there is a crack or puncture then you will not be able to find it with a meter, or even with your eyes.
Looking with the lights off may also help you find a spark "jumping". There may be a crack in a wire that is allowing your voltage to "jump" to a ground point causing a weak spark. Remember that when compressed you need a good strong spark to get ignition.
