what would you do?
I know a million is not that much compared to say 10 million & up. That is the challenging part; It's not enough to be filthy rich ...
Personally, I would pay off all my debts and work when I want too not when I have too.

Pay off debts, buy 3000gt VR4, Eclipse GSX 2nd gen and Evo 8 and then I will create a garage and such a garage that aall will be envious

I'd buy a really nice house on a lot of land with an enormous garage. Then toys to fill the garage, and a plasma TV or 5, and save the rest...if there's any left.

Alright, I'd buy a nice house (300,000) and then I'd buy a skyline, fully modded (150,000) and a cessna 182(150,000), a Lamborghini Diablo (150,000) and put the rest in the bank.

There are a lot of people here with more money then I have (and I lied a bit, I'm just short of a million without counting equity). No handouts from me. Only charities and government enforced donations (taxes) get the money for nothing.

I'm not sure what you mean by asset class.... I work full time and while I make more then the median income, I'm not in the top tax bracket by any means. My wife and I are just really good at saving money and I'm really good at predicting market trends and spotting good investments. If anyone paid attention to the things I've suggested as investments and sold when I said it was a good idea - everyoneone would have (at minimum) trippled whatever they committed.
I may be little more then a software developer, but I'm cocky enough to know I'm good at other things too.

I used to post more, but the politics usually pushed the threads off the front page.
Yup - Apple was a good call. My wife bought a thousand shares or so several months ago and its paid off nicely.
As for what I invest in - just about everything. I try to keep enough in savings that my wife and I can go a couple years without having to work or dip into any investment accounts. We keep a slush fund for speculative investments (like those Apple stocks) that we'd be dissapointed to lose, but has no bearing on the long term plans for retirement. Our retirement accounts (SEP, 401Ks and handful of Brokerage accounts) are built for aggressive growth since we are still a few decades from retirement. A wide veriety of choices in there.
If anyone is thinking about getting into the market - READ READ READ! Read up on the companies history. Read reviews about the company. Pay close attention to any turnover in management. Read about their long term plans. Read up any litigation they are in. Read up on any government interaction with them (any government in the world). Investing into a single stock is like gambling. Don't put in more then you're willing to lose.
Diversify. Almost all major banks have retirement calculators. Use them. See where you are at or what you need to do to get where you want to be. http://www.principal.com/retirement/ind/index.htm After that, money saved is gravey to do as you see fit. Some invest in commodities that lose value. While I've bought my fair share of cars, we generally don't buy many things that lose value (beyond necessities). We want to be retired and travelling the world before we're sixty.

Sage advice. And remember noobs, distinguish between a company's fundamentals (growth prospects, strategy, management etc) and valuation. A very good company can be a very bad investment ;)
Good luck to everyone in making a million. Except to Yogs - doesnt sound like he needs it :icon16:

HAHAHA. I invest too and have more money than any typical college student should. One of my stocks pays for schooling. I'm a little different than you are Yogs. I invest in the long-term, minimum probably 20-30 years also depending on the economy in the near to far future.
Also, just saving your money in general. Dont just cash every check, put at least 10% of it in a savings account. Vary that number depending on your after bills and expenses income and how much spending money you typically need and try and reduce it.

The first thing i would do, is cover myself in peanut butter and have a 15 hooker gangbang..
Then, i'd buy a decent sized house (not to expensive) with a big yard and garage. Get an 05 srt4 with stage 3 mopar turbo, an srt10 dodge ram, and a new C6 vette..
Then, i'd have to figure out where to invest my money to make it last a long time. lets say after buying all this crap (tv's/electronics/cars/house/15 hookers etc) you have like 300K, thats still ALOT of money to live on, you can make that last 20-30 tears or more if properly invested..

Oh, as far as charity goes, nah, sorry..i'll keep this paper for myself. Our govt should take care of all that charity crap, seriously, they MAKE money, incase yall forgot.
It's so funny how they'll spend 10 billion $$ on some stupid satelite, yet not END poverty in the united states..
A while back, when ODB was on TRL, a women called up and asked him how is he gonna help out his community being that he is now famous..
ODB replies "aha..nothing, they didn't help me"..
If anything, i would help out wounded animals before humans, for gods sake at least humans HAVE the ability to help themselves.

That so?
I speak to brokers every working day of my life. There are two things you should consider:
1) These guys aren't sweating over your performance. Their aim is to generate some volume for themselves. This leads to frequent - and often highly dubious - "switch" calls.
2) Some of these guys' track records are poor considering the amount they earn.
This doesn't mean they have no value. Broker research can be very good and by all means use it. But listen to as many opinions as you can - and yes, that includes non-professionals' - and make your own decision based on what you believe and your own investment criteria.

Nah, I wasn't saying brokers are all great(personally don't trust any of them further than I can throw them, so I do my own investing). It just bothers me how I and many many others are always being bothered for tips and whatnot, just because we have knowledge over the economy, and markets abroad. Nothing in life is free, so why should the opportunity to better your financial holdings be? My 2cents. Peace-

Personally, the only reason i wouldn't give investment advice (excluding ethical reasons and responsibilities to my employer) is because i dont want to be held accountable if a stock i recommend plummets.
But why should you be bothered about "bettering someone else's financial holdings"? Some people may have tips in return, and besides getting people into your investments can only help you, albeit only if you trade in small, illiquid securities...

I totaly agree with you on this. This is the only major reason that I don't give out tips free. The other reason is, If i spent lets say 20+hours researching a specific fund or coporation. Then that is my 20hours that I have lost in order to hopefully produce returns. If I just give that information away and it blows up(large returns), then what is the differance from this and working in that persons(the guy i gave the info to) business for 20hours and not recieving pay? I say if you're going to invest(as everyone with a stable income should) either pay someone to do it for you, or do it yourself, or a combo of both. Don't go around looking for someone to tell you the which bond/stock/fund/etc... is the "shit" for free. IMO thats the equivelant to standing out on the corner with a cup. Peace-

You know, the Japanese economy is bloody booming, chuck as much as you can into it!!!!
:spit:
Errrrrrmmm....... Obviously I'd turn my $1 million into better money, I mean NZ$1 million barely gets you the highlife these days. That said I'd probably buy one of the new Honda Legends when they come out and then raid the Mugen catalogue. Also might put a little bit of cash into a Turbo'd DC2 Integra Type R or a fully worked 2JZGTE'd Toyota Altezza

As slave has pointed out, the 'million dollar thread' is a pretty standard off topic chestnut, and just for a change, we are getting some intelligent posts scattered through the vacuous and flippant ones.
So far the one I like best involves demolishing an H2. :evillol:

If i won a million i'd buy two R32 Skyline GT-R's, modify one like the one i have in GT3, and restore the second to the condition it left the factory in.
No idea what i'd do with the rest as it wouldn't be enough to buy a Ferrari F50 (which costs about $1m here i think). :(

Alcohol, a bastard innit? Makes you forget that Eclispe GSX's are AWD.......
If I had $1 million given to me? I guess I'd upgrade to an M3, put some money away in a Savings account and put the rest into investments, simple as that really.

HRM I'd buy a Chevelle, a boat, a nice little beach house, pay for university and depending on how nice my bf is at the time, I'll buy him a Skyline that works like it should.

What happens to people who have the tendency to want to spend money? they lose it.
I hate spending money I earn, I might not have "just under a million" saved up, I have just over 1k, which IMO is a fair amount to me. New exhaust tomorrow :D
