the short version - my escort sat unused for about 2-3 months. so of course, the battery died. we replaced the battery, but now, the car will not start unless you press on the gas. actually, it starts as you are letting off the gas.
it has been this way for about two weeks. then last night, it wouldn't start at all. it cranks, but just wont start.
any ideas....

Check to see if your getting any spark-this happened to me .It was my timming belt had broke also it could be your fuel pump, see if your getting gas,or dist coil should be checked .Id start out checking 4 spark first. Then go one by one till u find the problem. If u dont get any other answers, and r stuck u can e-mail me.

Your problem may be no pressure in your tank. Cheack your gas cap.
I've heard of this before. You may have a slow leek in your tank that got really bad from not using it for a long time. Playing with the gas pedal may have truned on the pump to help it start.
Just before you turn your key to turn the car over you will be able to here you pump turn on. Make sure everything is off and turn your key slightly. To the point where you radio would turn on. If you hear a hum from the back that will be your pump turning on. If there is no hum then the pump is not working.

You could have water in your gas tank from condensation. Also, the gas in the tank could have turned bad. Get some Stabil at Wal-Mart and add it to your gas. You can check for water by disconnecting your fuel line at the filter located on the firewall and turn on your key and run some fuel into a quart jar. Water is heavier than gas and will go to the bottom of the jar.

thanks for the suggestions.
but, it does still seem to be a battery problem. it jump starts just fine..with no gas givin to it.
the radio loses memory also, which says its the battery...
why giving it gas helps the weak battery, perplexes me.
but, I am buying a brand new battery for it today...
is there a certain battery I should get for it..
the manual says one battery number, the battery that is in there now has a different number, and the battery prior had a different number.
sorry, I am just girl who knows not a thing about cars except how to drive them :)

Go to Wal-Mart or Auto Zone and they will replace your battery for just the price of the battery. No charge for installation. It does sound like the battery is your problem
