20 V Battery ???

I have a 2001 Gsr with an eclipse sound amplifier, lately the amplifier has been turning off for no reason. I decided to test my battery with a voltmeter, and got 20 Volts!?, and i'm sure that my voltmeter is accurate. This is with the car ON and all accessories on (Heating, a/c, etc..). I know that it shouldnt be over 15V.My amp has a safety feature, if it detects too much or not enough current, it automatically shuts off. My amp is obviously being overcharged by my electrical system. My question is: is the problem coming from my battery or my alternator??

Sounds like your voltage regualtor has gone bad. Do you still have any warranty on the car? If so then I would take it in and tell them that you think the voltage regulator has gone bad, and that you had taken it to autozone and the tested the battery and while doinig that they noticed the alternator was putting out 20 volts. Also you need to expect some trouble over the amps at the dealership, they may say that they caused the problem. If so then it looks like you will either paying them or doing it yourself.

are you sure you had the volt meter set right. mine is adjustable and if i set it at 50 and test a 12v lead it shows 50. also is the amp conected to the battery or something else check your remote wire also.
how much power is the amp and how much power are you subs you might just have them matched up wrong

The amp is connected directly to the battery, with the proper fuse, im using a 10 guage wire. I checked the ground and power wire, everything is fine. Its a 4/3/2 channel eclipse ampifier. Right now its working in 3 channel mode, with 140 Rms going to my 150 Rms JL Audio sub, and 140 Rms going to my front speakers and tweeters. My Rear speakers are connected to the head unit. All my speakers and subs and 4 ohms and my amp is also rated at 4 ohms, 14.4 V, but its recieving 20 V from my battery!

Did you read the posts above? Did you have a meter and eas it set correctly on the right setting? If the meter was right then you need a new voltage regulator, you need to read the information given to you and then give us answers or more information etc. Otherwise we cannot help you.

Actually, if you read my previous post, for the most part at least, i was answering integrawhat's questions, but i admit that did fail to answer a minor question, so the answer is yes: i did have the meter on the right setting. The problem was with the meter itself, since i tested it with a different meter where i work (on the same setting) and it measured 14.5 V. The meter must of recently broke because i tested it with a different battery on another car a month ago and it worked fine. Sorry for the inconvenience guys, i guess the problem must be with my amplifier.

I don't think it was a minor question seeing as how that is what was leading you down the wrong path. Hope you get it fixed ;)
