For a 93 Maxima, is it possible to replace 2 or 3 lifters? Or do all 24 need to be replaced?

If your problem is sound, the lifters might be just tuck. Someone said the other day that using some scum removal oil additive took his VGE noise off. Try that first, clicking noise itself [if lifters] is not dangerous.

The valves are in two cylinder blocks, one at a time is opened. I really do not know, but I suspect you can change one at a time. But is it feasible? All worn parts should be replaced as necessary; go to Nissan shop for evaluation [that should be free], decide later after a second opinion somewhere else.

Yes, the problem is indeed noise (a ticking sound). I think I found the 2 or 3 that are bad, but my mechanic suggested replacing all 24!! and its pretty expensive. Have you heard of this tickin noise problem before? You say its not dangerous - can you explain more? Thanks

Valve clicking comes from too wide valve clearance. This means valves do not open enough. The danger is that the valves do not close [opposite] and hot gases burn the sealing edges. Only power loss, maybe in the long run some abnormal wear.

...scum removal oil additive ... Try that first.

Don't forget that two metals hammering each other definately causes damage{mushrooming of both components}.DONOT ignore any metal to metal sounds coming from your engine. If it is the lifters , change all or you will be chasing them one by one.very expensive on labour this way.
