Cargo Carrier

Has anyone used a cargo carrier on a Blazer...if so are there any plans out there to build your own...they don't look that complicated...

Nope, better to buy one.

I bought a rooftop carrier from Sears. Hauls a lot of stuff, but as one might expect, it shoots your gas mileage to hell.
Plus, while running through Atlanta on my way to the mountains a while back,it got exceptionally windy & had a lot of fun trying to drive in a straight line @80 mph!

I'm looking into the carriers that mount on the trailer hitch receiver, but they're really expensive, so I want to find a good one for the money.

I use a fullsize Karrite carrier. Its black and works nicely with the Blazer roof rack and I don't notice any adverse effects on gas mileage. Here is a similar one, but in grey.

one major thing about thew hitch racks is that you can only haul up to 500 pounds if you have a 2" receiver and only up to about 200 or 350 if you have a 1 1/4" receiver and get an adapter for the rack. My dad uses a rack on his Jeep with a 2" receiver and has come in handy for hunting, and small cargo. The rack is only about 24" x 60" about. I have a rack for my blazer but I have to use an adapter. My rack also has the ability to fold up when not in use so that it sticks up in the air instead of out behind my vehicle. Although I have found out that my rack tends to sway side to side a little when driving due to the adapter. I have not used it too hard to know how I like mine compared to my dad's really. Another major thing to worry about is when you are backing up make sure to remember you have it there or you may end up backing into a vehicle (my dad almsot has numerous tiems now).

On the other hand, this WAS Atlanta for cryin' out loud. At 80 mph, cars were zooming by so fast, it gave the illusion that we were going backwards.
On a different trip through there, I bumped it up to almost 90 & two garbage trucks blew by me like a couple of F-14's.
My wife said "wow, we just got smoked by a couple of garbage trucks!"

I know what you mean sunliner. 80 mph is probably the minimum speed you should drive in Atlanta or you will absolutely get ran over. I hate driving there. There is nothing like getting passed by a semi-truck pushing 100 mph.

Drive the speed you want. Get in the slower lane and go the limit or 10 over.

Not trying to be a smart-a**, BlazerLT, but at most points in the adventure, I WAS in the slow lane, just trying not to get plowed.

Hey-not to divert attention from cargo carriers or my ATL adventure, but what are those tunes on those soundclips on your website? Sounded pretty sharp-& I like the truck too!
That's how I'd eventually like to do mine up-not real "flashy" on the outside but customized.

Yeah I've been through Atlanta a few times. It is NUTS. Of course people race when I drive through Burlington Ontario too, but there aren't nearly so many cars or lanes as Atlanta. In NY all the highway speed limits around me are 55. It's hard driven 75 and slowing down to 55 in NY. It's like you're crawling.

I would like to get one of those rear trailer hitch carriers for my moped. I see rv's with them all the time. The moped fits fine in my jimmy with my speakers out, but then I miss my tunes.

I have a 2" reciever and a bikerack that I've used quite frequently. The combined weight of the bikes and the rack I used is about 150 lbs. My moped weighs 200 lbs and I'm sure a rack would weigh at least 50. With the jimmy completely loaded down and the bike rack on, the rear sinks and gets very bouncy at high speeds. I'm afraid the moped carrier would be worse.
