Hi Automotiveforums!

It's been a while since I've stopped by, but I thought you all would enjoy looking at my latest exotic super car concept called the Enigma III! If you like this, there’s a lot more where that came from. Check out www.Gryphonauto.com for my entire collection. Feel free to show your friends – all this work might as well go to some use. If you have any questions, ask away!

Enjoy…

Those are awsome!!!! very nice work.

I have 2 quick questions:

Do you use rhino to model and max to render?

and

Is it easier to model a car in rhino compared to max?

Correct

Is it easier to model a car in rhino compared to max?
Not necessarily. Rhino specializes in NURBS modeling, so if you are doing NURBS then I’d recommend rhino. (NURBS is a modeling method, which is difficult, but rewarding.) For mesh-modeling, just stick with 3DS Max.

Ha ha, thanks!!!

Thanks for the compliment! I always appreciate support. These renders aren’t my best renders ever (look at my C6 body kti work for better ones). I’m actually having some trouble with 3DS Max, which I probably won’t be able to fix until I get another hard-drive (Christmas time). So, in a few weeks, I should be putting out some better renders.

Would you be so kind as to model an 86 prelude? I can provide you with pictures, measurements and whatever else you need.
“Whatever else I need” = $$$

3D modeling takes a long time and is a very specialized skill. I might Photoshop something for a friend, but if you want 3D modeling – it’ll take something extra to get me motivated.

Hi Alex,

I work independently, and am not looking for a 9-5 design job. I think working at a single company would be like trying to contain a great white shark in a simple fish tank. I think I’d rather work at McDonalds.

Eventually, I’d like to build my own company, but until I have the $$$GREEN$$$, what I'm trying to do is "license" the use of these designs to various companies, and I would collect a specific royalty (fixed percentage of sale price per unit sold). If a company wanted to build one of these, they could contact me and we'd work out an agreement - a sort of partnership I suppose. Once I have the money, I can just find the production myself.

I’ve had a number of startups attempt my projects, but they usually don’t know what they’re getting in to so they fail faster than they start. I really need something more reliable. What I’m currently planning is trying to contact magazine writers and see if any of them would be interested writing an article about my work & after that contacting specific companies.

I’m currently planning on targeting kit-car companies. A kit-car company that replaced their replica Lamborghini shell with the Enigma 3 could quadruple sales, quadruple the sale price, avoid legal risks, and put their company on the map. Any kit-car company can slap together a chassis inside of a replica or rip-off styling, but what puts a kit-car company on the map is when their product has correctly designed exotic styling.

If you have any questions about how this works, feel free to ask. I’m willing to answer most question because I really have nothing to hide.

I’d rather not work for a company doing automotive design. Currently I do this freelance, so anyone can contact me and get a custom design made. Right now I’m focusing on body-kit manufacturers and kit-car (replicas or similar) manufacturers.

I think I try to make it harder on myself, because I focus on smooth curvy designs. You have to have everything flow into each other and make it look clean, plus the thing with curvy designs is if you don’t get it perfect, it looks really awkward (Callaway C12 is a good example).

I want to do what you are doing exept instead of bodies design actual car (susension, motor, chassis ect.).
I think it’s best to let people trained in engineering do the engineering tasks. I mean I have a degree in math with minors in physics and computer science, so technical stuff isn’t foreign to me, but I know enough to know I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s also not very cost effective, because no one in their right mind would take my cassis design, so I’d be wasting my time. I’m sure I could learn it easily and quickly, but I’m much better off prioritizing and focusing my efforts.

Those cars are amazing, how did you get started? (just wondering don't have to answer),
How did I get started? During college I started modifying a game called Descent 3. I started 3D modeling space ships, missiles and other things in a free editor. The modeling software was very basic and I’m a precise sort of person, I was actually using my calculator to help me define precise curves in 3D space. I basically built the 1500 polygon spaceships point by point - mathematically. Ok, those of you who know anything about 3D modeling can burst out in laughter.

Well, I enjoyed creating objects in 3D space enough that mid-way through my MOD I decided to start trying out some free 3D modeling software (“Strada 3D” I think). Anyways, 3D was extremely natural to me and what I really liked is I could actually show concepts that I had in my head in 3D much more easily than I could sketch them. When I tried sketching my concepts they’d always be so disproportionate that they were useless, but in 3D I could build them in their entirety. Eventually I decided to make a “cool looking car” and people really liked it.

From there I thought I’d try actually designing a car. I started by visiting a bunch of automotive forums (I didn’t know what a corvette was at the time) and asking around to see what people liked and didn’t like. I guess I kind of turned it into a science. 3 months later I finished the panther design (on my website – www.GryphonAuto.com).

Since then I haven’t stopped designing cars and have decided that I want to build a company. Current plans are to get a couple design contracted to existing companies and collect royalties. I know consumers exist to buy my designs as products (cars, kit-cars, or body kits), but I need a manufacturer. Once I collect that money I’ll be able to fund the production of some body kits & then I’ll build up to kit cars & eventually full-blown exotic super cars. We’ll see how far I get, but it would be cool to see “Gryphon Automotive” up there with companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini. If I take things one step at a time, I imagine I can’t go too wrong. I might be a bit ambitious, but regardless of what anyone thinks I’m going to try to achieve my goals.

Your orange enigam III is my computer's background now
Cool, glad you like it!

By the way, I'm sure some of you know that I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to my work (especially if any of you were around when I was designing the Predator). I guess I'm not showing you the final version of the Enigma 3. I just had too many ideas of how to make it better and couldn't resist. This is going to be a lot of work, but I think it shouldn't take me too long & it's already looking better. "The best is yet to come?" I think so.

http://www.gryphonauto.com/Extra/e3/e3-revisions-02.jpg

As you can see I scribbled on top of my own pictures :). Well, I don't expect it to make a lot of sense, so I'll explain a little. The areas above the wheel-wells are a little pinched, so I'm increasing the volume a little (will give better reflections). As far as the hood, instead of a 2-hump system (humps above the wheel-wells) I'm doing a slight 3-hump system & increasing he volume. The spoiler sketch is crappy, so you'll just have to wait. I'm removing the rear lip, making the rear not as tall in the back & adding an effect to make the rear look significantly wider and less tall. I'm also significantly reducing the size of the "humps" behind the seats, which should help with visual proportions (not quite as much reduction as I show in the pictures). Lastly, I'm making the lights and lower vents a little wider & revising the other vents and adding a plate holder. I don't know if any of that made any sense, but I think you guys will enjoy the result.

I've been making a MASSIVE of progress on the updates and I might actually be able to show the updates in a day or two. All I've got to say is that the version of the Enigma 3 you see now will look bland and flat next to my updated version. I’m loving the updates, but I think I’ll leave it as a surprise this time instead of showing progress images.
