painting woes....not good

well the one thing that i have prided my self on in my model building has really upset me. some of you heard about the problem with the paint peeling off with the masking tape when i was doing the two tone on my chevelle. Well i was spraying a GTX and it did the same thing. the paint wasn't adhering to the primer. I am actually scared to finish the paint on my chevelle for fear that it will pull up just like it did last time. i cannot figure out what teh deal is. here is my painting order...i do all my prep work, shaving, sanding, filling and what not. then i follow with duplicolor high build, rust colored primer....to help fill minor scratches, and pick out the imperfections. then i follow with duplicolor regular sandable primer in dark grey..then on with the actual color of the car, which is also duplicolor. im fairly careful. i dont think that i touch the body between primer and paint...it usually stays on teh paint stand...any ideas?

This seems very anoying, as you're using the same brand on all the paint it can't be incompatibility. There has to be something contaminating the surface for you and if you haven't changed anything in your work procedure I have no clue what can be wrong. I had this with enamel over Tamiya white primer, just wouldn't adhere properly and you could chip it of with a light stroke of the finger nail.

Sorry that I can't be of more help to you!

well, i just got done laying the blue over the silver for my chevelle, and it worked out fine this time. although i did use a different procedure for removing the pin stiriping tape i used to mask the paint line. I applied some heat to help release teh tape. and i didn't tape over the whole body, i used some printer paper to help color the silver that wasn't going to be sprayed to minimize the use of tape, and the risk. the big test will come tomorrow or thursday when i mask off for the pin stripe. if it pulls then, the car is going to be one color. cause im sick of fighting this thing and ready to have it done. i'll keep you guys posted. oh, i also wet sanded the silver to give the blue a surface to stick to, and washed my hands thoroughly just for some added insurance

just wondering how long do you let the paint dry?

Sounds to me you are using the wrong kind of tape. What type are you using?
Maybe it is simply to strong and sticks too well to the paint and therefore is lifting the paint off

When I do a 2-tone paint job, after I apply the first color I clearcoat it, then maskoff. and sand the new area to painted and shoot the second color, this not only stops you from damaging the paint with tape, it also gives you a really clean mask line, because the colors wont bleed at the seam.

I use dupli-color as well, just white primer, but anyhow, that method works great for me.

hey, duplicolor makes a primer for plastic and polycarbonate, maybe you should spray that on it fist before applying any other paint so it will not come off with masking tape, i use scotch automotive masking tape and it dont peel off

i too use the scotch automotive tape. the thing is, the paint comes off all the way to teh primer, the primer isn't lifting from the plastic.im guessing i just accidentally contaminated the primer because thus far my chevelle has come out good. im doing the pinstripe right now..

Try using Tamiya masking tape or Blue painters tape from 3M. Both are excellent as they are not "tacky" and have crisp lines of separation, not allowing bleed through. Good luck.

i never wait until it is dry. i''ve dont numerous two tone paint jobs w/o problems. i dont have a problem with the fresh paint..it is the paint that i have laid down and am painting over for the two tone..but my chevelle worked.. i'll get a pic up in a bit

I just use 2 coats of Krylon primer, and I've never had a bad reaction with it...whether I use Dupli-color or nailpolish or whatever, it's never reacted badly. I also second the 3M blue tape, that is all I use. Granted, I've never done a 2-tone job, but I have done stripes on a car and they came out fine.
