I have my check engine light on in my '94 Ford Crown Vic. How do I go about reading codes and getting the list of what the codes mean? It's been on since I've had it (2 years) with no apparent problem. But as of late it's been really bugging me. Oh and it comes and goes. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I have my check engine light on in my '94 Chev Crown Vic.
Thats kinda an insult...
But you can buy a code scanner, they run you about a hundred bucks or so but they come in soooo handy. you can get one from any auto store. plus once you have your scanner you can use it any time you have a check engine light come on, and that can save you a bunch of money in the long run...
Good luck

Hi
I had the exact same problem, exact same car. Very easy cure. Don't have to buy a scanner. The EGR needs to be cleaned.
See this article. It worked for me - no more check engine light!

ALSO, check the seat belt switch. Alot of cops hate the ding-ding noise because they like to ride with out the seatbelt, so they disconnect the wire where the buckle hooks up to. Doing so can cause the CE light to come on and stay on, but some times it comes and goes.
ALSO- are you fueling up while leaving your engine running? Removing the gas cap and fueling up with the engine on can cause changes in presure in the fuel system. The computer may think there is a leak some where becuase of the changes and trigger the idiot light. It may take few days for the system to recognize that there is no leak causing the light to turn off. This would cause one to believe that the light turns on and off whenver.
