Ok so I was at work, looking at the car parts for my new car (well new to me lol), I have to change the air filter since it has been in the car for 4 years without being cleaned, I have three choices, Motomaster (Canadian Tire house brand), Quacker State and K&N Drop-In. The MM is about 8$, the Quacker State is about 10$ and the K&N is 80$!!!!!!! I'm thinking it must be a mistake since I'm looking this up in the computer system. But it's not, so I get the Motomaster since my 1991 Topaz won't need more, but who would actually buy the K&N? How good could it be to be 10 times more expensive??

how long do you want to keep the topaz??
the longer you want it to run the better filter you could put in. but its probably not a great deal.. i'd just buy the next best.. no more than $20 for a car like that (no offense)

None taken, it's the shit-mobile man, I think I'll get that put across the windshield..... I'll keep it until the end of the winter for sure, then if it keeps going, I'll keep it until I get a 240. maybe keep it as a winter car, which i would need if I had a 240. BTW, I have the Motomaster cheapo one, that's what was in there before and it ran for 4 years so...lol, I take pics of the car when I get the chance, lol.

Yeah, you do have them down there, A Mercury Topaz. This isn't mine, but it's basically that car without the fancy wheel covers and I don't have a trunk rack.

The K&N is that expensive because it's a reusable one. After a few thousand miles you rinse it out, dry it, re-oil it and stick it back in.
I think they claim 1 000 000 miles or something for them....

Yea, every K&N filter is guaranteed to run for a million miles. But $80? Is that $80 canadian? If so how much is that in US? Usually the US drop in price is about $35-$40.

because K&N is the best you can buy, and you never have to buy another one. Plus when used properly it filters out more particles and produces more horsepower. I sound like a salesman
I would advise changing your oil filter more then once every 4 years lmao!

I saw an experiment where they tested a whole bunch of filters (Apexi, K&N, HKS etc).
They all flowed pretty much the same, Apexi had the best filtering, and HKS was absolutely shit. Might as well just run it without an air filter (common trend in Japan :/)

god I hope thats not a reason why someone would buy an Apexi filter
K&N!!! maybe if you lived in Japan Id get something else, or just get my usdm tyte yo K&N shipped overseas
The more I learn about tuning and having cars that actually run good, the less I think of big companies that spread themselves out so much(Apexi, Blitz, Eibach) they just make products to make money, they have the type of product that someone is buying it just because of the name. I like to find companies that make parts because people want them and they spend more in devolpment of them. Who makes a better built vehicle? Ford or Ferrari?

Apex is a good company. Thier air filter probably is pretty good, but how much of a difference do you think its gonna make as opposed to the K&N cone type? Not much. Get a K&N and save the money you would have spent on the Apex filter.

I'm not saying I'd get an Apex'i, I'm saying it's gorgeous. I'll do my homework when it's time to buy performance parts.

The upshot with the Apexi vs K&N is the Apexi is dry, while you have to oil the K&N. You have to be careful with the oil, too much, and you can coat your air flow meter, then things start getting....funky.
Oh, and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you ever blow a K&N filter out with compressed air.
