recently, my engine has been making very loud knocking sounds. it has done it before, but it has been very seldom and not very loud. it wasn't until recently that i heard it sitting in a mcdonald's drive through. i am not sure because it has gotten really cold lately or what. if anyone knows what this would be any knowledge would be greatful.

i replaced the timing chain last year i think. the chain was bouncing and it grinded through my one guide. it took me the much of the weekend to do it, but confident i fixed that.

we set the timing to stock specs when we did the chain. and it only started knocking recently.

What fuel do you run? What spark plugs are you using? Even if it is at stock spec, it can't hurt to take the timing back to stop knocking(at least until you figure out the problem).

93 octane. it's all stock. i got a motor coming probably be here in the begining of the year. it's just that i am 3+ hours from home at college, and i just want to make sure it doesn't break down until i can get it to my brother's shop.

Just drive it really easy until you get it straightened out. Make sure it isn't something in your engine bay rattling too.

did u mean like physical knocking sounds like banging, or pinging aka knocking. cold weather wouldnt affect detonation, in fact it would help prevent it if anything.

it's not a rattling, or nothing being loose i have checked it over. and i do maintain my car keep fluid levels good and such. the only way i can explain the sound is you know when on tv and movies when like the car runs out of gas or breaks down how it makes like a knocking sound. that is the only way i know how to explain it.

a car shouldn't be knocking at idle. no matter how crappy of gas or how advanced the timing is. esp if its that loud, i fear taht it could be main bearing failure from lack of oil pressure etc. are you blowing out smoke or burning oil in anyways?

yeah, i don't burn oil out the exhaust, but i do burn oil. i change it every 3k miles, but it still gets low and i keep it to it's level. i know the engine isn't fairing too well i expected that when i bought it. i just want it last me until my motor comes. i am just trying to figure out what it is so many i can make sure not to do something. thank you all for your imput. i really appreciate it.
