I finally traded cars with my friend... i just have to say that i have found a new level of respect for Grand Prixs. One i thought couldn't be reached. The GTP is so much better then my GT. The smaller pulleys and the u bend and resonator removal really help it breathe and its such a noticable dif. If you dont have your resonator and u bend cut out... i would recomend doing it. Anyways.. i have a question for you all. My buddy that i got the GTP from has an open cone intake on it... and its a cheap one but it has a K&N 9 incher. The only problem is .. its a very short intake the cone ends up right over where the stock air box would be right above where i have the PCM placed.. I want to get pix for you guys to show you better, but it says i cannot post attachements.... weird. Anyways, i was wondering if this open cone intake is actually doing more harm then good since it is more then likely bringing in hot air from the engine? It is very cold in michigan right now and its around 20-30 degrees outside temp but still.. for when summer comes and its around 90, should i think about switiching to a cold air intake??? this intake is a 50$ ebay POS in my opinion. but who is to say its not doing its job??

I dynoed 347whp/382tq on stock heads with that kind of intake. With that said I am still going to get a used Wizair box for the track.

The bad thing about and open cone is that you may run thru water and get the filter wet, then you can't draw air. Also may get water into the motor.
The reason for a cold air box is to get COOL air from the outside. (The air under your hood being warmer then outside). Also gets dirtier faster.
Now this should get a fight going.

When dynoing the hood is up the fans are going and the best intake is the short ram air.

At the track with the headlight out, I have always used a FWI. This Saturday I will be trying all three a Wizair box, a FWI, and the dyno setup.

Have you been sleeping in class? 99% of the raceing you do is not at any track. And it is not on a dyno machine. If you want cold or cool air, you better get it from outside the car. Either cold air box or ram-air. Read a lot lately that taken your headlights out only makes car lighter, and by how much. Short tube is better then stock, that it.

thank you kustom kid, exactly man, your car is sweet sleeper, but i will never ever ever . i repeat ever be taking my GTP to a track. I juss wanna be able to smoke a few people when the light turns green... But my intake does look very similar to the one in your positioin, i just ordered some of those NGK TR6s, 2 heat ranges colder. should help reduce a small amount of KR, assuming i have any. I just dont know if i should get the Wizaired CAI, if that open cone is working alright, then i dont have 215$ to juss get a few more HP. Also, Kustom Kid, you seem smart. :) so in your opinion, since i just got this used 97 GTP with 100 K miles on it... what kinds of things should i do right now, as far as tuning it up and maintainace goes. Im thinking i should have the struts and maybe the ball joints looked at?? help non-gearhead out Thanks,

Travis

If it was mine. I'd take it to a shop you can trust. Have the oil changed, supercharger oil changed, and have the guy look it over. This is were the trust comes in. Ask the guy to give it the once over. Find out if anything is wrong with the car, or if it needs anything.
Keep the motor like it is and drive it. Unless you live someplace warm, your not going to be doing any raceing for a couple months. Put the money a side. Then buy the things you need. One big part, rockers, cam, headers anything. And some smaller things. You can line up 10 Grand Prixs and they all are differnet. Enjoy the car, don't let it break you.
Good luck

How much is it on average to have cams installed.. My buddy chad from ZZperformance is doing all the work on my grand prix...not officially at ZZ, just by himself in our town. How much is a reasonable price for him to ask me to pay for installing a CAM into my car??? rough estimates accepted :) and also, would it be a good idea putting cams into a car with 100K miles on it...cams seem to be the best HP:1$ mod you can buy, but if its gunna be like 300$ to install them, then i dont know. And 500-600 for rocker arms plus installation, could someone that knows about rockers tell me if its really worth it...?

Email this guy [email protected] he has a set of 1-1.9 rockers for sale for $180.00. And if your buddy Chad is a friend, why is he charging you to install?

Because installing a cam is a hard job, and i would pay him regardless. We dont hang out or anything, we were just introduced by a friend. Why question that other then to be a dick???
