I have a 91 Riviera that all of sudden started dying when the brake was applied, now the thing will start fine but will not hold acceleration. It starts and then dies, like it is not getting any fuel, I have changed the cam position sensor and tried gum out fuel injector cleaner, there is a sweet smell and emmissions coming from behind the firewall into the car from the dash... Someone told me it was my egr valve gone bad. Basically it starts fine, but then dies.

Now someone tells me its my fuel filter... How dangerous is this for me to do at home? Is it gonna flow like a fountain?

The sweet smell sounds like a coolant leak. If its inside the car, its the heater core thats leaking. If its under the hood, its a rad hose or heater hose.
As for your car, chances are its not the EGR. The fuel filter sounds likely. You can change it on your own, its not difficult, but some fuel will leak when you remove it, maybe a cupful or two, so have a drain pan ready and put the cigarette out.
It might alss be a bad fuel pump, but change the filter first, its a lot cheaper.
