i need an answer!

Okay, so i had a talk with my dad about putting a Viper remote start/alarm in my 98 honda prelude. I argued that it would give the car more time to start up in the morning at 7 when i go to school. Because i am always late to get there i never get any time to warm it up, so by getting the remote start i am able to give the engine more time to warm up before driving in 40 degree weather. My father argued that the engine did not need to be warrmed up for more than 30 seconds. I've heard from many that that is not true, but can i get anothers opinion?!

should cars be warmed up - before driven ? definetley - how much? optimally to the normal operating temp range - realistically - warm enough to not cause damage, without wasting too much fuel - prolonged idling can also lead to detonation in the long drawn out scheme of things.

I'm a canuck so i always forget the F to C conversion i think it's something like (temp - 18)/2 or something weird - in any case i doubt 40deg F is that cold, and it prob doesn't take too long for your car to warm up. try -40 degrees Celcius up in yellowknife where i used to live - our batteries had to have their own heat blankets!!! and you wouldn't have a chance starting it if you didn't plug your block heater in the night before. but that's probably like one of those "I walked to school uphill both ways when i was younger" kind of stories.

that being said would i vouch for you to get a starter just so you don't have to get your lazy ass out of bed early? not a chance :P

but best of luck with this. maybe santa will be kind anyways, but i doubt he gets a starter for lazy assed rudolph!

Yes as stated above it is absolutely necessary to warm the motor up before driving. Metal expands when heated and contracts when cooled, so that being said when the car is not at the normal operating temp most of the metal parts in the motor will have more clearance than they should have. Driving the car in this condition shortens the life of the motor. So yes it would be a good idea to put a remote starter on but just simply going out side with an extra key and starting it up and then going back inside and getting ready for school will work too ;)

ludeguy for ur info the conversion of F to C is subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9 therefore the inverse would be to divide by 5/9 and then add 32. but yea I would just go outside start the car, drop it in neutral, then get ready. it shouldnt take too long in order to heat up to normal temp. so you'll have time to get ready. and in case u didnt know ur car runs better in colder weather, but not if ur car is not initially heated.

I sell them so of course I will say yes!!! Really though it is better to have all the fluids moving well before hammering on it on the way to school.

I always let the prelude warm up for like 5 minutes before driving, and will never go above 3500 rpms until it's a regular temp. Although I noticed in the honda manual it says that your car only needs to be idled for a minute before driving.

I can warm up your engine just for you so you wont be late for school. I am also a student and so what school do you go?
