Hello:
Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with the 2004 Quest SE not wanting to shift up into overdrive at highway speeds. At 110 KPH or about 70 MPH it wants to run at about 2200 RPM where it should run at about 1800 RPM. I now have to shift up manually with cruise or accelerator. There is a big difference in MPG at these speeds if you don't notice it. I have taken it up with the service dept but no answers yet since March.
Thanks in advance for any replys.

Never use Overdrive On the highway it will over heat your engine..

Here's some info that might help. As for the first reply to your post.....
How the hell do you figure the the highest transmission gear(overdrive), would cause the engine to overheat!? Your RPM's are at there lowest at highway speed. Common sense tells one that a higher RPM would INCREASE your engine temp. So if you use overdrive to lower the RPM's, would that not lower ease the workload of the engine? RULE OF THUMB! Below 45(in the city), keep the overdrive OFF. Above 45mph(highway speed), have the overdrive ON.

If you have overdrive on the highway it's bad for the car cuz when it uses overdrive it uses the engine 100% and going that high of speed may make your car over heat. And you only use overdrive when you need it once u dont need it anymore turn it off its' just a boost for ur engine.

What your saying makes no sense. Dude, you have no idea what your talking about. When you use overdrive, you use 100% of your engine? Explain. So when do you suggest to use overdrive????? You know what. Why don't you explain what overdrive is. We'd love to hear your version.

Hello:
Ok. My idea of an driving any automatic vehicle is to just put the van in gear and let the tranny do it’s thing unless you get into heavy pulling or going downhill and you want the engine to do some braking for you. However in this case the van gets into 5th gear alright but it just won’t get into overdrive ( maybe 5th is overdrivre on this vehicle I’m not sure, in that case the van gets into 4th ok but won’t shift into 5th. There are occasions however when going downhill or when having a strong tailwind that the van will shift into 5th or overdrive and the RPMs drop to around 1900 at 70 MPH. Otherwise the RPMs stay at about 2200. There is never any problem with overheating and there should not be whether it shifts up or not but there is a significant problem with fuel economy as much as 5 MPG at this speed. You can check it on the computer. Anyway I hope anyone with a 5 speed checks this out because you could be burning a lot more gas than you need to.

I have the 5 speed. Look at the link I gave you, educate yourself, and march back into the dealer and demand they keep it till they replicate the problem. Or take them for a test drive with you. It should be shifting into 5th gear(overdrive). I'm not trying to be rude, but what do you want, someone else to say they have the same problem? Nissan already knows they have an issue with transmission shifting problems. Work off that.

Hello:
Yes I fully intend to get the problem solved but Nissan has not admitted that they have a problem with the 5 speed. During the test drives I’ve taken service men on they tell me that the transmission is just compensating for the excess drag at that speed. I know this is bull but up until now I’ve had nothing or no-one to back me up. It would be a lot easier if someone else had the same problem so I could document and show these so called experts that this is indeed a real problem.
