i heard from somebody at gamestop that sony lost a lawsuit against them for selling faulty equipment, so now if you get the disc read error it is free to repair, and i just wanna know if this is true?

all i did to mine was take the top off it and remove the disk tray cover and clean the eye off, mine slowly went down, at first mine started getting slower at reading the disks for a while the it got to were i would have to reset it a few times, and then it wouldnt read it at all, so i just wiped the eye off, now when i trun it on it doesnt even go to the browser it goes to the playstation 2 logo at the start of the game that is in allready in the system.

that is exactly the problem i have, the description was exactly what i had, so if i do what you did it should work, has yours shown any probems yet or is it still running well

i done mine 2 weeks ago and its still working perfect, i have watched movies in it and everything, it endured 9 hours straight while my little cousin was at my house last weekend, so mine is cured.
heres how u take it appart
the bottom of the machine has 6 little rubber like blocks, remove them, and remove the screws, the upper top that hangs out farther has 2 screws in it, you have to remove the little plastic blocks from there to get to the screws. you will have to pry the lid to get it off and also you will need to remove the warranty sticker, then be careful pulling the top off, remove the on/off and reset buttons, they just pop out through the back of the console lid, then remove (i think) 4 or 6 screws, you will need a tiny 4 way screw driver, this will remove the cover that is over the disc/laser tray, and you will then be able to clean the eye. you can do it with lense cleaner or just wipe it off good with a soft cloth. then just put her back together. and it should work like new.

Same damn thing happened to mine.....It's Still sittin here...I took it all apart and rubbed the laser or w/e with rubbing alochol and ear swabs....Stilll doesnt work,So I guess Im gonna have to go buy the new little one..because it costs like 50 bucks to repair...My advice..if it doesnt work bring it to EBgames and get money for it...

the problem isn't the lens its self! it's actually the adjustment is off. when you take it apart, turn it on and open the tray, near the top, you should see a gear that can turn, turn it a click or two in either direction, then put in a disk, cover it up, then turn the playstation back on. keep diong that till it works. there should be a little whole where the factory default is if i'm not mistaken. (i had to fix these a lot, i've gotten quite good, i think in total, it takes me 5 minutes)

i checked up all ribbon cables it wasn't any of that, i raelly do think its just scratched lens, but anyway im rougher than ever with this new one because if it breaks i can just walk in again and get a brand new one with no charge for the next 2 years, if you rebuy a ps2 i suggest go to best buy and get the 20$ deal were they give you a new one if the thing ever breaks, i dont even worry about it anymore, its nice.
