Oil Life Monitor

How does the oil life monitor work? Does it know that it was about 3 month/3,000 miles since the last oil change or can it tell if the oil is getting dirty or does the dealer have to punch some code in to reset it?

I'm just curoius since last Thursday my 'Change Oil' light came on but it's only been about 1,200 miles and almost 3 months since the last oil change. But when I got my oil changed, it was done when I bought it at a Hyundai dealer...so if it's some sort of code they punch in to reset it, then they probably didn't do that. :rolleyes:

I'm planning on waiting until 3,000 miles before I change the oil, even though that will be about 5 months after my last oil change. I don't drive a whole lot; about 3 miles round trip 5 days a week to school and another 12 miles round trip when I go to work.

I change my oil every 3000 miles with regular 5W30. Check you operator manual and there is a procedure to reset the "change oil light" something like putting the key in the ignition and turning it on (but not start) and hitting the gas pedal to the ground 3 times in 5 seconds then turning the ignition off.

If the oil was changed and the "change oil light" wasn't reset the light will come on when the engine is started, but then will quickly go out in less than a minute (10-30sec typical).

Typically my change oil light goes on around 3500- 5000 miles. I always thought it was a sensor that checked the cleanliness of the oil and not just a mileage indicator.

As far as I know the oil life monitor monitors everything but the oil condition. It will count the time, engine revolution, milage, engine load, ect since the monitor was last zeroed (i.e. change oil light turned off), and base on these info combined it turns on the change oil light at the moment it thinks right :confused: .

I change oil myself, and I always change at 3k miles or 3 months, always sooner than the change-oil light turns on, so i'm completely out of cycle. And when the light turns on I simply reset it.

To reset, turn the key to run position but without starting the engine, fully press and release gas pedal three times in 5 seconds (try to even up your action), the light will blink, indicating the monitor is zeroed.

OK thanks for the info! But wouldn't pressing the gas pedal to the floor for too long flood the cylinders?

THANKS BURNOUT524 MY OIL LIGHT OFF NOW!!!!

Pressing the gas pedal to the floor doesn't flood the engine because these are fuel injected, not carburated.

That's why they say to turn the key to on but don't start the engine. The computer knows the engine is not running.

On my '99 the procedure to reset the light is as described above. You will know it works b/c it will flash the "change oil" light a few times.

I think it also monitors oil temperature. In the bottom of my oil pan is a sensor which I assume is a temp sensor. One of the best things to preserve oil life is long drives where the oil gets good and hot and burns off any junk that gets in it like water or gasoline.
