I own a 1996 dodge Caravan. When driving the van it runs rough it was stalling when slowing down. Stepping on the gas she didn't want to go until you hit a 100 then it was fine until you slow down again. Brought it to the garage over a week ago and it is still there. They did a major tune up they said that was the problem. Well it iddles good now apperently but still when you step on the gas she doesn't want to go. They have check the fuel pump, said it was fine. They have put it on the diagnostics they said it had some problem but the check engine light should be on.They tried changing the module that wasn't the problem. A friend of mine said he could smell some gas coming from the exaust. Now they think its the whole brain of the computer and want to change it. Could that be the problem? any help would be appreciated. I have put 66 000 klm since owning the van. I have 175000 klm. I have change two transmission at a total cost of $4000. Plus a good $2000 in other repairs. The van was 3 yrs old when we bought it. Any advice would help

Be very careful when a mechanic says "it is the whole brain of the computer". Usually, they are just guessing when they say that. Ask them if you will not be charged if replacing the engine computer does not fix the problem. The engine computers on these cars do not seem to fail very often. When they say the fuel pump is good, do they mean that they tested the fuel pressure? Have they check for exhuast system restrictions? Have they tested engine compression? Have the put the car on a scope and checked the strength of the spark while the engine is under load? Weak ignition coil?

I bought mine brand new and babied it. Chrysler Transmissions (actually "torque converters") are THE worst. I'll never buy another Caravan. Ever. In the mean time, I'm gonna drive mine into the ground and after it's dead, float it out into the Long Island Sound on a flaming raft - A Viking Burial.
Nah. Maybe I'll just burn it. :(
