Insurance question

Well here is my problem. I'm getting tired of paying for my insurance. I'm 18, and currently my insurance is about $95/month for just liability. I live in a no-fault state. When February rolls around, it will be time to renew my insurance. What I'm thinking of doing is renewing the policy, getting the insurance card, then as soon as I get it, cancel the policy. Drive like that for the next 5 months. I would be extremely careful, never speed, or break any laws, basically avoid any accidents. This way, if I don't cause any accidents, I saved up this money, and I can spend it on racing at a track. What do you think about doing this?

Have you gotten any tickets or accidents? What kind of car do you have? I have a 1992 Buick Skylark listed as my primary car and my Civic listed as my secondary. The Skylark was my first car and only has liability on it and my Civic has full coverage and i pay only $32 per month for the Civic. I have never gotten a ticket, or pulled over, or in any accident. Plus i get no accidents bonus and good student (A honor roll) discounts on my insurance. Have your parents put a shitty car for your primary car and insure the car your driving now under your secondary and list the title to your parents and that will save a lot.

That's the thing about no fault. If I hit your car and it's totally my fault, my insurance company would only pay your medical bills, they wouldn't pay for your car. You would have to file a claim with your own insurance company to get your car fixed. So basically I'll have to avoid at-fault collisions. That's the catch.
i don't know if they will let you post here from jail...
I won't go to jail, because if a cop pulls me over, I'll have to insurance card with me, and he won't know that the policy has been cancelled.

Assholes who skimp out on paying their insurance screw the rest of us :swear: We have enough of those fuckers here in Michigan that drive up the costs. Don't become on of those.
If you can't afford the insurance, its time you stop driving and take another mode of transportation.

But if the cop desides to check your insurance your fucked. Here once you cancel your insurance, your insurance company notifies the DMV, I think you get 24 hours to drive and if you dont have insurance, byebye licence

I live 10 miles from my work and school. Can't ride my bike. I set up an appointment to talk with the insurance agent, because I think I might have been getting overcharged for like the past 6 months. I'll see what happens after that.

Dude just pay it. I got into a wreck a few months ago with a guy with no insurance. He was at fault and the wreck cost him over $10,000 on my half. I have no clue what he has to pay for for his medical and such, so he's fucked.
So I'd personally pay $95 a day rather than run the risk of paying thousands to an insurance company if you get into a wreck.
I would be extremely careful, never speed, or break any laws, basically avoid any accidents.
You can say that now, but you will wind up speeding at least. And how can you be certain you will avoid any accidents even if you do drive like that? Iwasn't speeding when I got into my wreck or doing anything wrong at all. The dumb fuck pulled across my lane and stopped across it not even 30ft infront of me, and I was going under the speed limit actually because I'd just hit my brakes to avoid another moron.
And it is beacuse of those who don't pay for insurance the rest of us get fucked in the ass.

I've worked in insurance, and have seen too many people try to slide by, then get sued after an accident they didn't have insurance for that was their fault. Results are any and all of the below:
Jail, driver's license suspended (or perm. revoked), all the way up to having to pay millions, by having 1/2 their paycheck taken for the rest of their life.
No matter how careful you are there's always "something" that could happen. A patch of ice. You hydroplane. Your wheel falls off. You get stung by a bee, swat it and hit somebody (all REAL examples)
Auto insurance is like a safety net for a trapeze artist. You can work without it, but when you need it you're awfully glad you have it and the cost no longer matters.
Pay your $95, no matter how hard it hurts. It's not worth the risk.

Well, I talked to the agent today. He had his head stuck up his ass, and he argued his bullcrap, saying that people like me cause like 70% of insurance claims (that's I think a little overexaggerated, it's probably closer to 35%). Well, no releif until about august of next year, when it will go down 15% if I don't get any tickets, and then it will go down some more when I turn 19 next december. It didn't go down any after I turned 18, which I think is complete bullcrap again, because I've been driving for 2.5 years already, and I pay the same rate as someone who has just gotten their licence. I just hate insurance companies. I've never had to file a claim, (and I didn't cause anybody else to have to either), and I already wasted thousands of dollars on them

You are pathetic - either use public transportation, or quit bitching and pay the god damn insurance.

Very true. I hated paying insurance until the guy who caused $1500 in damages. Sure thats not as much as I've paid in insurance over the years, but the 2nd wreck that totaled the guys van (which wasn't his to top it off) and I thought totaled my car but didn't, cost well over $10,000 in damages to my car alone. We currently pay $159 for full coverage on my eclipse and his dodge truck. Neither of us have ever had a ticket and he did hit a guard rail 4yrs ago, but since that was 4yrs ago its off the record now. And that $159 is well worth the safety in knowing I won't ever be the idiot without insurance.

I drive a car that's worth $1500. The thing about no fault is that even if I do get into an accident, they won't pay for any damages to my car, even if it's not my fault. So why not save that insurance money for a year, and have $1200 in the bank in case something does actually happen? I will probably never drive a car that's worth more than $3000 on the road in my life, because if I do have 15000 to spend on a car, it will be track only.

Listen IDIOT ... pay the damn insurance!!
What people and the insurance agent are saying is true. People without insurance are causing the rates to go higher.
$95.00/month for insurance ... are you kidding me !! If you can't pay that then park your car. In Ontario, Canada (where I live !!) ... it is a $4000.00 fine for driving without insurance. Then you lose your license for 2 yrs., then when you try to get insurance, it is next to impossible without paying through the ass.
Pay your $95.00/mth and stop your bitching !!! IDIOT !!

Because you even asked that question, you obviously are not mature enough to operate a motor vehicle. It's a priveledge, not a right. Insurance is part of the price for entry into the driver's club. If you were to get into an accident with me, I would hire lawyers to hound you to the grave. You would never be able to dig yourself out of the hole of debt that could be caused. I don't even like lawsuits. How would you or your parents like to pay off thousand of dollars in damages and medical bills? That means no new playstation games, hip clothes, CDs, or reefer for a long long time. Pull your instant gratification craving head out of your ass and get with the program.

This keeps coming up over and over. I live in Michigan, which is a no-fault state. That means that if i hit YOUR car, and it's my fault, i DON'T have to pay for damages. it's the LAW. The only thing that I might have to pay for are medical bills, but my car only weighs like 2000 pounds, if I hit your huge SUV, you won't get hurt.

Just thought of something else. If you drive without insurance as a minor, your parents can lose everything they have. If they have nothing, they will have a judgement against them if they ever do get anything. Plus, everyone in your household will lose their insurance or at least be moved to a higher risk category once the insurance company matches the address. They will assume you're driving their cars.

only 200 a month for tuition? that's insanely inexpensive... my highschool payment was 7500 a year... college is easier to pay for, more tuition assistance is available, and you can get student loans.
reguardless of what i think, what i know is that there are at least a few people who have posted here who know more than you do. whether it is about life, or the law... this could turn into the classic example of not listening to those who know, then bitching and wondering why everything went so wrong. grow up, and be mature enough to take responsibility for anything you MIGHT do (which is why you would have insurance anyway).

But here where I lived, if I'd been that van owner, I'd be fucked without insurance.

How much does one of those cost? How fast can they go? 80 mph? How many miles does the engine last for?

Claw, seriously though. Pay your insurance. Even though MI is a no-fault state, the injuries caused in even a minor accident could drain your pocket forever.
$19 a month for the bike....hmmmm.....

Every winter, I have no choice. I just wish next year nothing happens.
I got it up to 105mph until the pannels started flying off. Its not very aerodynamic.
Makes for cheap insurance, cheap gas, cheap maintanance, cheap transportation all around.

Thats a horrible idea! Never do that. Trust me, no matter how carefull you think you are shit always happens. Its Murphy's Law man! You can run from Murphy's Law!
