My '01 Jetta TDI is due for a timing belt replacement, The dealer has quoted an astronimical price to do it. My questions are this, being very handy in the shop can I do this myself? Any special tools needed? Should anything else be replaced besides just the belt? Vehicle has 70000Km on it with an automatic transmission. Also does any one know why there is so much of a mileage difference when changing the timing belt on an ''01 compared to the '02 with manual transmission. My other Jetta the '02 doesn't call for timing belt replacement until I believe 120000km.

Thanks

Get a good maual, like a Bentley, and see if you're up to it. There aer a few special tools that you need & they're widely available, even on eBay.

There is special tools to lock the cam and there is also a special tool to lock the injector pump sprocket so you dont loose timing.

TDI timing belts are the hardest ones that I have done of any vw.

I like to do my own work on the motorcycle. I looked at the pictures on tdiclub.com for changing the timing belt. I thought it looked pretty straight forward until I got HALFWAY throught the pictures. I don't think I would ever try to change it. It looks very difficult to me.

The hardest part of changing the Jetta timing belt is taking it apart and removing the engine mounts after searching for the 3 hidden bolts the manual DOESN'T tell you about!!! I'm working on a 2000 GT and after taking the belt off the cam slipped a bit so now I have to reset the timing BUT since the head is so close and the plug depth is to deep to get any other socket except the 5/8 spark plug socket in... I can't get my compression tester seated to check it! ANY SUGGESTIONS???

You can,t go wrong buying original volks manual, sometimes thats what happens when trying to be too thrifty and saving a few pennies.
