I have a 1997 F-150 Supercab, 4x4, when I am in 4 wheel drive, I cannot turn the truck sharply. When I do I get a popping and cracking noise and the truck acts like the brakes are applied. I can drive straight and turn slightly with no problems. Any ideas ?? I know a little about truck, but not versed in 4x4 stuff.

Check your front axle joints, especially the left outter one. If the joints are worn, they will bind and cause the problems that you are having. Two winters ago, when I was snow plowing, my truck started making cracking noises and I felt it binding a little. I thought that I could finish plowing, but my left outter joint let go and destroyed the axle and flange reuiring me to purchase a new axle, very expensive. Check the outter joints is my word of advice to you.

You are only supposed to have the front axle locked when in slippery conditions. Like snow/ice or mud. All 4WD vehicles with locking transfercase will bind on turns.
