I have an 89 cherokee. I just put a new ac compressor in the car. I really don't need to charge it since winter is just starting, but I do need to get some oil in it. I think it is an r-12 system. Can I just put the oil in the compressor without charging it? I think I can remove the drain plug and pour oil into the compressor. Can I do this, and if so what kind of oil should I use? I really don't care about having ac. I just need the pully to work freely.

I'm not sure if yours is a r12 or an r134a system - you would have to check on the stickers under the hood where it should tell you which it is or if it has been converted from r12.
I can tell you that you should not run it without being charged though. Properly evacuating and recharging will prevent corosion inside the system and ruining the compressor you just replaced.
The moisture in an uncharged system will cause damage.
Have you changed the reciever/dryer?? Needs to be done and it should be opened to see if there are any pieces floating around in the system that will cause problems. If there are, the evaporator, condensor and lines will need flushing before the system is sealed up and recharging is started.

Also keep in mind that when you use the defroster, the air is processed through the dryer in the A/C system. You will hear the compressor running when you have the defroster on. It is made like this to quickly defrost your windshield and also lube the seals in the A/C system.
