Warming up?

I've always been raised to let your car/truck warm up in the winter for a few minutes before getting on your way. Some people tell me that with newer vehicles there's absolutely no need to do this, just let it run for a few seconds, and then go, it will warm up faster under load (of course), but it won't hurt anything. I have a 2000 Ranger. Opinions?

Yup, start it up run 30 sec. to 1 min. and go....Mine, a 1999 has 80,000 on it and runs fine...But I do change oil every 4,000 mi. Later Mark

its still a good idea to let your car warm up for a few min when its cold, otherwise you put all that oil pressure on the seals in the engine and tans that have shrunk due to the cold

Like nos_355 says, definately a good idea to let the engine idle a couple of minutes under extreme cold conditions (teens or less degF). Excessive idling just wasts gas, adds more wear to engine components & adds excessive heat to the ATF (automatic trucks).
