Fan motor removal

How do I get the cooling fan out of this 2.2 auto Cavalier? It looks like the starter has to come off, or the motor has to be cut out? What's the deal?

Not usually. usually the motor is in a Y shaped bracket. Unbolt the two bolts up top and the one on the bottom. Lift it straight out the top. Hope this helps, however I have not done this job on this model.

Have you figured this out yet? I have a 2002 cavalier and can not figure out how to get the fan off. There was a screw in the bottom right corner and the other three corners have some sort of connector. Everything is loose except the upper right which goes under the welded body of the car. Any ideas?

I am also interested in finding out how you do it. My 92 3.1 v6 needs a fan motor. It sounds like a chopper when it enguages. The mechanic told me that it's the motor bearing, and it would be easier to just replace the entire unit. Problem is, I can't get my hands down there to even touch it let alone unscrew anything.

Well I am not sure about the 1992 that is most likely different than the 2002 Cavalier we are talking about here. But for Bleed Dodge, I have figured it out:
First remove the Plastic Upper body paneling (just pops off and is replaced with new snaps)
Second remove the hood latch from above the radiator and undercarriage so it is out of your way.
Next, drop the radiator by removing the two bolts on the radiator brackets and popping it down.
If you have loosened the bottom fan bolt and the other two latches you can now push the radiator towards the motor and the fan will lift up and off. It is still a huge pain to get out of the engine well. Mine is all done. Good luck.

My buddy went and did it without me and he said that they just grabbed the plastic fan housing, and yanked it as hard as they could toward the engine. They were able to bend it back enough so that the fan motor itself could be taken out and replaced.

We're going to take a krazy karpet and bolt it somehow underneath so that the snow and sleet doesn't get up in there and fry the fan motor every time you drive through it. This is the second time this has happened on this car.
