Hey Everyone,
I've been having a problem with the defrost on my 1986 Jetta Carat. No air ever comes out of the defrost vents or the floor vents, when i put it on either of those settings the air blows out of the air conditioning vents. Everything else works fine and I am confused as to why this is happening and is getting pretty annoying during the cold morning drives to work. If anyone has any ideas of what I could check or how to fix this it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If there is a lack of air blowing in general then suspect the flaps inside the air box. The foam padding falls off & you lose control over the temp & recirculating functions. It sounds more like you are having trouble with the flap vacuum control unit (the part that the position controller is attached to). It isn't too hard to replace, however finding a good one is very hard.

Yea i can still control the temperature, just no air will ever come out of the floor or defrost vents. So to fix this i'd just have to replace whole position controller which the flap vacuum control unit is attached to?

You might want to also check the vacuum hoses in the engine compartment & there is a one-way check valve in-line before it goes through the firewall to the vacuum switch in the position control assy.
