Lights around stick shift don't light.

I had the lights fixed around my shifter since it was not working. This week it would turn off, I had to tap the shifter console to get the lights to work again. Last night they went out all together.
Would this be more of a wiring problem rather then just the lights?

I had the same problem. What I found was broken wires in the shift console. The wires move with shifter to provide power to the lamp.
I noticed in the beginning that the lamp would be out when shifter was pulled down to drive and would come on when returing position back through neurtal and park. A few inches of wire, some heat shrink tubing and a little soldering fixed the problem.

How difficult is it to remove the console???

There's 2 screws in the ash tray area, two screws way down inside the console, and two back at the rear part of the console. And pull the shifter off. There's a staple type fastener in front of the shifter you have to pull off. After you do this, the console pulls right apart and it is easy to replace the bulbs or repair a wire.
