Water in air vents

Hey All,
I've run into an odd problem with my 90 DX hatch and I need some advice :)
It seems as though I have some water (not sure how much) sitting in my air vents. It's the one on the drivers side that connects to the door. When I have the defroster on full blast (#4) I can hear/see water bubbling up in the vent (when the door is open). The vent also connects to another one right above the steering column and it's now starting to drip out of there when it's on. I caught some in a dish and it's definitely water and not coolant.
So... any ideas how water could have gotten in there in the first place and any suggestions on how to get it out? I tried prying the 2 pieces of vent apart to drain it but I couldn't get them apart. Maybe I could get something to seal the joint with and then shopvac it out or something?
Thanks
Joey
