so today coming home from work..
i notice this weird sound..
like a hollow grinding sound when i hit the breaks..as first it wasn't that bad, then when i got home, it was a heavy grinding sound....makin me nervous...sounds to me like its time for new breaks :/
im gonna hit up autozone or whatever tomorrow and get new pads....prolly need my rotors resurfaced too..but i dont know how much that'd cost, or where i could get it done....maybe just get new ones? i dunno..but this needs to be complete before 1pm tomorrow when i have to go to work!

well, before you just dive in and start changing things, you should check it out. i heard what i thought to be a break noise coming from my rear breaks. checked it out. the pads were in excellent condition. so i'd pull both front tires off and check the pads and rotors, and then pull a rear off and check the rear breaks and drum surface. the reason i say both fronts, and both rears might be a good idea as well, is that i had a 99 sebring convertible and one of the front pads came apart. and the rivets inside the pad tore the rotor up. if you need rotors resurfaced, i know that most o'reillys do it, 7 bucks a rotor, and im not sure about autozone

DOH! i didnt catch that ;)
hehe my bad!

anywho, i checked em out...the one that was making the hellish noise mustv got something stuck in em, and was rubbing, cause there was a ring around the rotor (heh) from where it was..and the pad itself looked pretty chewed up. i needed new pads anyway, i already knew that..needed them before i moved to ny from nc actually. went to the store, bought em, replaced em today, all is well!
just in time to go to work too ;)

Also could have been a little bit of rust on the rotors from humidity.

Most brake pads have a sensor for when they get low, a little metal piece rubs against the rotor making a squeaking noise. If you catch it in time, the rotors should be fine.

I had this same problem last week. Being the idiot that i am, i kept on driving. I have a Pontiac Sunbird. Its already a piece of crap, so i didnt worry about it. Well i finally had two days off college and i took it to Midas. Come to find out, the drums and the brakes on the back were shot, and i needed a complete overhaul on the front. I was like, "ok this sounds expensive." Indeed i was right. $615!!! I almost crapped a brick and threw it at the guy.
Long story short, I bought the parts myself and only spent $140. I spent about 3 hours and did the entire thing myself. This was doing the back brake shoes, drums, front brake pads, and rotator disks. Its not that hard, but you have to make sure your brake fluid pressure is back up to par.
My advice is to do what i did, jump in and get your hands dirty. And only do one side at a time so that you can use the other side for reference if you get lost.

You mean "rotors"? Cause I've never heard of a rotator disc and if that is actually a part of the brakes, then I would be highly surprised. Just wondering.

I have done all of my brakes, I learned how to do it when I installed my cross-drilled rotors. :D
