what is the purpose of the honey comb looking part of the mafs? and can it be removed?

I believe the honey combs are used to "straighten out" the incoming air, so that the sensor can get a more accurate reading. The lower honey comb CAN be taken out, but it's not a wise thing to do unless you're running so rich you have no other option (in which case you should pick up something to tune with ;) ) Usually, the car will run like shit if you take out the any of the honey combs.

its designed to dirrect all uncharged air into a strait line, where it runs past the "hot wire" wich is basicly the reader for your maf. if you take out the honey comb the air wont be correctly messured

just to clarify for people. taking out the honeycombs is a normal mod for 1G's but the 2G MAS is different so you should keep the honeycombs in it.
