Legality of SR20DET

Alright I've been reading the posts around and they seem to say that the SR20 motor is not legal in any state. If its before an OBD-II I don't think it shoudl matter should it? There doesn't need be a diagnostic hooked up... at least not in this state, just a sniffer test... That means if I put a cat on and tuned it well enough shouldn't it pass? The visual inspection is no problem at all I know the guy who does that. But if I stick to a 95 or before 240, if the car is tuned well enough, won't it pass emissions? Inspection itself is no big deal.

Also another question, with this SR20 engines, what are some realistic HP numbers without going nitrous? Has anyone seen 550+rwhp with these engines in thier cars? I want the car to pull very low 11's or very high 10's. Is this realistic at all? the car won't be daily driven, it will be a track/show/sunday driver.

Thanks in advance guys.

it isn't legal in the US because it wasn't produced in or for the US. lots of people can get away with it. it depends on where you live and how bad there are about looking at things. sr20's are good built motors and would pass smog i just don't think they would pass visual. also, dpends on where you are. my brother has s15 sr20det in his s14 240 and just got it inspected last month. he passed of course. granted i live in pennsylvania and i really doubt people would notice a difference.

with producing power any car can reach loads of power, but it cost money. the more money you have the more power you can have. most sr's with having stock internals and just tuning can hit 300rwhp pretty easily. i have heard some drag sr20's have hit 700hp, but that isn't streetable i think and most likely is sponsored, which means a lot of money was spent on it. it can be accomplished, but i am sure it would take bunch of money later. really if you are looking for something drag and a lot of power something with more than 2liters would be better. even though it is turbo it still has more limitations than larger displacement cars. good luck with your plans. hope that helped

i dont know about the legality thing, because i dont have to worry about it in indiana, but 550rwhp is a shload for a sr, imo. i would say get a mkIII supra(or mkIv if ur super rich) if ur looking for a drag car like that.

Haha yeah I live in PA too, plus I know the guy who will do teh visual pretty well so he'll just pass it. The smog was all I was worried about. Also I know it will take a bunch of money to hit 550+whp but I was just wondering if it would be done and obviously it can. I mean I do plan on going all out on the car and leave nothign stock... obviously... but thanks a bunch, now since I know it will pass the smog I can green light my project and go ahead and start looking for a car.

Your going to leave nothing stock? Wow, I wish I had a trust fund and my daddy paid for everything I did, no matter how stupid there were! You know even JGTC cars have stock parts right?

was gonna say my brother's shop has a blue fastback they will sell swapped, but doubt you would want to drive three and half hours for that.

haha yeah that is kinda far for me to drive, I'm going to wait untill after the christmas season too, I'll probabaly get around to buying one in febuary or so, so I can save up some money for the motor as well. Plus I need to get some extra room in my driveway... theres currently a cuple vehicles that need to be sold/removed so... that may take a while.

For the inspection my dad knows a guy... but most places won't know what the hell it is if it isn't badged... but thats besides the point... I'm about 30 minutes above Philly, but I don't have a 240 yet.

Uuummm...Toksin...what aggression? I know that coming in this forum like once every 2 and a half years and looking at one thread makes you know exactly the mentally of the whole forum, but around here, that's not an aggressive outburst. (Neither is this, btw.)
