I have a 92 eighty eight royale with 267k on the original engine and transmission, The last few months i've noticed after shifting out of park into another gear the transmission makes a pop kinda noise but always shifts smoothly. Whenever the car stalls out after i put it in drive to restart it then put it back ion drive the transmission does nothing but if i put it back in park the transmission pops then starts working fine again, What could be causeing this and please don't tell me my transmission is going.

267k on the original transmission
my transmission is going.

People are lucky to see 100K out of the first generation 4t60e tranny. A lot die on a 50,000 mile bassis or thereabouts.

60-100K is usually average for a taken care of transmision. alhtough if the car is highway miles they will last forever.

All this car ever sees is highway driveing, I got it in 97 with 59k miles and have been driveing it everyday since. The transmission shifts very smoothly and i change the fluid and filter often, But i can't figure out what this poping noise it and it disturbs me everytime i drive the car.

Mine makes a popping noise if I rev it way up in park and then let off the gas. Its kinda scary, but thats about the only time it does it. Of course Im missing third gear and overdrive so maybe thats part of the problem.

Try The Lucas Trans Fix Or Any Product Thats Not Cheap And Thats Supposed To Clean It Up On The Inside Without Changing The Fluid. I Had The Problem In My Intrepid And I Lucked Up And The Gears Started Changing Again Without The Clunk

Yeah, I have heard good things about Lucas ressurecting transmissions.

I have dumped two bottles of it in this beast, and it seems to have taken care of the clank. I still only have 1st and 2nd gear, but im hoping its the speed sensor not letting it shift into third.

There Is A Tcc Valve In The Trans That Also Keeps It From Swicthing Into 3-4 Or Overdrive I Think

yeah, but it wont actuate unless it gets the right signal from the speed sensor. I dont have any codes to indicate either are at fault, im just hopeful that its one or the other.

Speaking of, can you service that TCC without removing the transmission?

I can check with my neighbor tomorrow about the popping... He rebuilds transmissions for a living. Is it the 4T60E you have?

Still learning about these cars... So pardon my ignorance! A friend of mine just gave this to me - he didn't want to mess w/ selling it. I said - "Hell yeah!!"

I know he had my tranny replaced a while back w/ a GM Goodwrench reman. Not sure how many miles he got out of the original though.

yes it can be put in without removing the transmission, my 92 sits alot now but it has 170000 on the original trans with no shift problems. periodic maintenance does wonders sometimes, plus i prove to see the oldsmobile models ive had go to the death. heres an example check out my other oldsmobile i still have!

yeah its a 4T60E, whats it cost to get one rebuilt?

So I can pull the Tcc out ? Sweet! is there anyway to check it to see if it works or is it one of those things you just have to rebuild/replace and give it a try.

try autozone they may have one cheap to try to see if that works or not, you probably can pick up a used one from the salvage or junyard with ok miles for cheap

Is it coming from the transmission... He's not quite sure what it is w/out seeing it. Check the simple things first - engine mounts good? Is it internal to the tranny? Only does it when it's cold?

Where are you located? I'm in Raleigh, NC - he normally charges around $300 to rebuild a tranny someone brings him. But, getting it out is a bitch. You'd have to separate the frame of the car - at least that's what he said! "shrugs".

Maybe put it up on jackstands to get a closer look.... Keep us updated.

definetely a bitch to get out but its not that bad to take the subframe out on a lift, which most of us dont have! hopefully you have a buddy that know how to or can help you do it

Wow, thats cheap. The rebuild from zone is like 269 by itself.
Im in Ohio, in a little crappy town almost right in between columbus and cinnci.
I am trying to do everything I can to avoid pulling that tranny out, I have heard not a single thing about it being an easy thing regardless of obscene amounts of beer being present.

hopefully I can try the speed sensor this week and then move on to the Tcc before the hoist comes out.
