Poor gas mileage

My 97 A4 quattro gets very bad gas mileage. maybe 280-300miles on a tank on the hwy! in town it is much worse. the car has new plugs and wires and air filter. i may have a bad 02 sensor, but would this cause the bad gas mileage? i havent changed the fuel filter in quite a while too...
any suggestions on where to get the O2 sensors for a reasonable price as well as the fuel filter? thanks in advance.

I am having a similar problem with my 97 2.8 FWD. On the highway I get about 260 miles, but I believe that the fuel gauge is incorrect. When the "fuel low" dummy light turns on I can only get about 11 gallons into the tank and have read that the 97 A4 holds about 16.4.

Audi have a service bulletin regarding grounding problems with the fuel gauge on our year of car. I want to check the fix out for myself, to see if that solves the problem.

It is always a good idea to change the fuel filter if you suspect it is causing you problems. It is cheap and easy to replace.

I would also suggest to check your actual mileage by calculating it next time you fill up if you have not already done so. Even with my poor range (as told by the mileage counter) I get 26-29 on the highway. 17-20 around town. Keep in mind ...the 17 is when I drive around like my hair is on fire, and it is a stick.

i think my car is getting bad gas milage to how ever i can tell you right now it is not the 02 sensors if it is the ones that are bad are after cat if it before cat then you are jsut going to screw you your valves
