vette servos

Hello everybody,
I have heard very mixed opinions on installing corvette servos into our 4l60es. Some claim it ruins the transmission, while some people say it will actually save it.
I don't know who to believe, but I trust you guys. Pretty much everyone agrees that it gives sweet shifts, I just want to know if it'll turn bad in the long run.

They don't ruin the transmission.... They keep applied pressure more is all. About a 10 minute install. I run a vette servo, B&M Transpak, and a B&M Electronic shift improver... Very Very happy

Would that help a 91 w 161000 miles on it and how hard of an install because i saw they only run for about 20 bucks and that sounds pretty good for the money involved?

Pretty easy, simply pop off the cap, (pull the retainer ring) pull the old servo, put the new one in..

Thanks for the advice,
I already bought my servo, it was only $12.96 on ebay. I'm about ready to put it in but wanted to know a few more opinions first.
Right now I have the hypertech firm stiffness and shift point adjustment on. I've heard that this coupled with the servo is a great setup.
Seems like everyone thinks the servo is the best mod for your buck kinda thing. Some have said you need to move your transmission so you have enough clearance to get the pin out. However It seems like everything can come out one at a time with no problems.
Rlith, when you are adding ATF fluid do you pour it through your dipstick hole?

Yes, through the dip stick hole... But you should lose less than a cup of fluid changing the servo

How hard is it to press the cover in and take out the retaining ring? I'm planning on using the but end of my factory lugnut wrench to push the cap in. It seems like none of my projects end up being as easy as they should be...

Where?
I might do this myself.

O yeah, I jave soem good links too. These sites say you may need to move the tranny when you do it. Is that true rlith?

I've done 6 or 7 of these for friends and at worst I've just had to push it over with a prybar

Yea, I found both of them via google.
Deems to be not to bad of an install.

My uncle designs performance torque converters (and is working on some future corvette tranny) for GM so I figured he'd be an excellent source of insight about vette servos. I have read many conflicting arguments over whether servos are bad, neutral, or actually good for your tranny. I sought truth and this is what he wrote back:
First of all, a post 1993 4L60 transmission (4L60E) would try to correct for the quick shift by reducing pressure at shift. If it couldn't correct, you would get a service engine soon light / trouble code. The servo/accumulator limits or softens the pressure applied to the clutch pack during the shift.
Second, a faster shift is easier on clutch packs (less energy/heat into the clutch pack & oil). However, you are spinning a lot of inertia with engine / converter. So at a shift, there is engine torque + inertia torque. Inertia torque = (Engine & Converter Inertia x deceleration). The input
shaft / turbine shaft is one of the weaker links in the transmission. You can chirp the tires at every shift until the turbine shaft snaps.
I thought this would be interesting to know. Although I believe my uncle and have little knowledge about transmissions, I'm not too concerned about breaking my turbine shaft because I don't try to chirp my tires. I have the hypertech firm stiffness already installed so the computer wouldn't correct my shift pressure (if that was a problem).
I have my vette servo and plan on installing it over next week. I got some VERY comprehensive pictures and instructions (more helpful than the links) from the friendly ebayer who sold me my servo and I plan on posting them soon.

So how did you make out installing your servo?

So this mod will give faster, smother shifts? I see that it's usually done in combo w/a shift kit but can it be done as a stand alone project??

I haven't done it yet... I can't seem to be able to find or get the retaining ring out. I already have the hypertech shifting upgrade so my shifts are already noticably quick and haven't bothered yet...

Reason i ask is im getting extra money together for work to do on it over the summer and have been gathering research and knowlege on this and am gonna go w a B&M shift kit with the vette servo.

hahaha, you won't need much for the servo, I got mine for $7, I wouldn't spend much more than that...
The hypertech programming has my shifts tight right now. I'm a little afraid it will be too harsh with the servo.

yup thats why i told my dad im gonna need a half a bank to get it done because i figure when thats out he should probally rebuild it and install a new oil pump while its out.

For the cost of a rebuild and what not you should just dump a v8 into it!

Hey guys,
I finally got my servo in! It took alot more than 10 minutes (an hour and a half), but it should have only taken a half an hour if the stupid snap clips would cooperate.
The shifts are quicker. You can definetely tell at half throttle. I have the Hypertech tuning so my shifts were already pretty good. I had one chance to try it at full throttle and it was scary quick- It almost felt like a turbo was kicking in on the shift (well maybe not). I'm happy it's done!

You better reduce the hypertech shifting firmness or you could be upping the fluid pressure too high and causing damage.

Yeah I was going to deprogram it anyways I'll let you know what happens.
