1.5"-1.75" is the max before camber kits are strongly recommended. You still need an alignment to correct the toe at least. That wears out the whole tire unlike a little negative camber wears the inside edge only.
If you have little money to spend, buy some good struts now and then save for springs. A tight budget should stay away from adjustable height per the reasons found in your other post. The least expensive quality parts I suggest are H&R springs and KYB AGX or Tokico Illumina's.

thanks for the info. i personally do not like coilovers , because i've heard disaster stories of them enough times, i am thinking of resorting to springs.. so do you think that springs that drop 1.25 - 2.00 ish and new struts would allow me to not do a camber kit with that rim/tire package..

1.75" is the critical point IMO before tires really begin to wear. Not only do they wear out quickly the performance of the car decreases because of the small contact patches. Driving on half the tire isn't the safest thing for a street car, for racing it's a whole nother story.
You may want to check out H&R's Cup Kit(think it's available for your car) Nice spring/strut kit.

Also if you drop too low you will bottom out your shocks and the ride will suck.
