modifying a 22re

what would be the best way to get a bit more life in the 2.4. would simple bolt ons make a difference.(hi flo intake, headers,flywheel ect..) or would it be nescessary to open up the engine to oversize it ect.
oh and i would need something reliable. it would be a daily driver and some offroading with 31-35 inch tires.
