whats up guys...
i just wanted to let you guys know that i have finaly reached my goals in my gpgt. I am 18 for those who dont know me and have been busin my @ss workin for over 4 years now to by performance parts for my gp. I just bought the cartuning 3.8l turbo kit with the ceramic coating and upgraded turbo along with, thrasher shift kit, borla exhaust system, desert fox tranny cooler, ebachi lowering springs, the new struts from pfyc with the ajustable knob, the carbon fiber f1 ram air hood, american eagle 176 wheels, and a thrasher cai kit. on all of my mods i did kinda go nuts but just under 10,000 well worth it if your askin me.. lol...

now my ?. I took the car off the road for the cold months and it is in my garage with all of my upgrades not in it yet.. I went to a shop and asked when would be the best time to put it all in and he said asap. Would it be a good idea to get everthing installed now b4 the cold months or should i waite untill the coldest is over considering it is not going to be on the road untill winter is pretty much over.... thanks a lot for your help guys...
ps. while i have it in the garage should i start it up periodically to keep it runing or just leave it be untill i am ready to bring it to the shop to get it done up.

Well, nows about a good time to start saving up for your tranny rebuild after the turbo is installed.

Did you ask the guy at the shop why he recommended doing it ASAP? As far as storing your car, it's not a bad idea to start it up periodically. Let it run until it gets up to operating temperature.

Cass, did you start a new bussiness?

now there's a man with a plan! very impressive list. i don't know why the garage wants you to put it on asap though maybe they need some xtra Christmas money. the only thing that's going to suck is having all these parts and have to wait another couple of months to see what she has after you slap them on. ooohh man it's going to a long winter.

Tom, you sound like you got your shiat together, you prolly know a bit more then i do. But one thing i see missing from your list is a Tranny cooler, that could help. Tom if your tranny is good iunno what you should get, i would say keep the normal gt tranny cuz despite what people say, its badass and durable. But since you have a turbo, i have no idea, cuz i dont know jack shit about turbos, those are really not my thing, i bet Kustom Kid or Big-L can atleast give a few suggestions as to what to do.... they seem like they know what they are doing around hureeee

He has one listed.

desert fox tranny cooler, ebachi lowering springs, the new struts from pfyc with the ajustable knob, the carbon fiber f1 ram air hood, american eagle 176 wheels, and a thrasher cai kit.

You cant use the Thrasher CAI with a Turbo set-up.Look at the pic and you will see why.

whoops, my bad, i read the list very quickly, hmm Tom, sounds as if you are good to go, yeah iunno tho, i personally wouldn't have gone with the turbo on a grand prix... for 3 grand you could have done some other shit to get it up there.... for 3 grand you coulda bought a good ass rebuilt S/C, something other than an Eaton M90

You always have someone on here going to say what they would do with that money. I think you went the right way with the turbo The shop prolly told you to do it asap cause in the winter time is when they get slow being im from WI they tell me to bring it in during winter months. Good Luck with the setup and post some pics when its done.

But sometimes it's good when you hear more ideas.

Anyway, what other SC's fit on the 3800 besides the Eaton M90?

And what are the trade offs of turbo over super?

I take it you havent looked at what came in the kit???

See the black hose with that blue filter on it,that will be your new intake hose and filter that goes on the intake side of the turbo

I wasn't saying you made a mistake by buying the turbo, your car is gunna kick ass indeed. It is all based on preference. The turbo cost 3000$, plus a new tranny every 3 years. add it up... Tom, i must say, you better post some pics of your GT when you are done. I wanna see that beast, and if you get a chance, take it to the local strip and post the #s you run with that bad boy. Good luck and i will pray for warm weather for ya so you can start assembling your "GTbeast" ;)

thanks man, i cant wait ither... but about the tranny problems that you think are going to happen. I have reserched and reserched and many people say it wont be a problem, while others say it will. I will take my chance, but if it happens a first time i will still be working and i will purchase a super beefed up tranny. I am not going to wait every 3 years for the tranny to blow, i like doing things right, therefore i hope there are no problems but if there are, i did not spend all this money for nothing, i will do it right, i will put in the overtime at work, and i will make my gt a f***en beast....

Hi Larry,
He wants to run the Thrasher air box. Don't think cold air will be any trouble.

maybe this should be a new thread but here goes anyway....
what about "dual" or "twin" charging (i.e. turbo and super charging)
is it possible?
If not why?
It seems like they both do the same thing by increasing the pressure in the intake right?

That's what I want to do, run the add on turbo through the stock Eaton M90..... I don't know yet, I'm doing research. (surfing the net)

just so that you know...

The Grand Prix Store's (see previous links) turbo kit can be run through the Eaton M90 Supercharger, but only after it is disabled (disabling kit available at a charge with the turbo). Here is a brief explaination of why only one forced induction is used at a time.

Roots type superchargers are positive displacement, meaning that for a given engine cycle a specific amount of air is forced into the chamber. This is not the case with the centrifugal style. As the RPMs go up the boost goes up exponentially. This is the reason a competant turbo kit will have a blow of valve that makes the exhaust bypass the turbo when the intake pressure gets too high. Both the supercharger (with gearing)and the turbo are able to achieve this critical pressure (the turbo purportedly up to 30psi). Even with an intercooler if both were run at the same time detonation would easily occur unless tuning of a significant level was done. This tuning would involve a computer determined reduction of engine performance (by spark retard, etc.), massive amounts of fuel injection, water or water/alchohol injection (a topic deserving its own discussion, see subaru WRX for an example), or extremely high octane fuels (I am not talking about 92 pump gas). The efficiency of the system would go down in each of the above methods (with the exception of the water injection) and make using the supercharger in conjuction with the turbo impractical. If this is unclear please sight an area and I will attempt to explain better, however the conclusion is that it is better to use either a turbo or a supercharger seperately (with the possible exception of electic parrallel supercharging to avoid turbo lag, which is not currently available).

The main reason for using a turbo rather than a supercharger (even with turbo lag) is the efficiency of the turbo. The turbo is able to regain some of the energy that is wasted in the exhaust while the supercharger is completely parasitic. Which is why I am planning on using the turbo on my 2002 GT.

Tranny problems will be an issue however the weekest link in the tranny appears to be the pinion gear. So when you do put the turbo on don't do burn outs. The pinion gear is not lubricated well enough to take sustained open differential operation and I have not found a limited slip insert for the 4T65E/HD tranny. If the pinion gear goes the differential will grenade and destroy your tranny. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
