Help!!Rear end sagging and clunking

I have a 1987 Cherokee Pioneer, this is my first jeep branded car, and I am having a problem with the rear end. When I loaded up my family I noticed a scraping coming from the back when I hit a bump, when it's a big bump It would bang really hard. I took it to a mechanic who told me to get new shocks which I did and still the banging when I have people or anything heavy in the back, not as bad though. I spoke to another mechanic who told me to replace the leaf springs and another told me it has some cushioning that helps the shocks. I don't know what to get and the rear end is still low. I want to raise the back and be able to drive with people. Any suggestions.

If the rear is sagging that badly, you may need new springs. Sometimes you can add a "helper" spring to restore the lift. As an alternative, you could try air assisted shocks.

Sounds like you need new leaf springs.

A little suspension class...springs provide the lift and support. Shocks are there to dappen the springs so you don't bounce all over the road. Ever seen a car with a broken shock? It looks funny bouncing all over the place. Some newer cars use shocks as helpers for the springs but they are not designed to do the job of springs, especially leaf springs like a Jeep has.

The first guy who just replaced the shocks? Never go there again! He should have known it was the springs first and then the shocks but the shocks were probably worn and are really easy to sell and make $$ from...

check the bumperetts located on the frame, the real axle will actually hit the frame and make a clunking sound if u are missing these, happened to me before,

I agree with b1gfella, replace the springs. It's not uncommon for leaf springs to break right at the hole where the retaining bolt goes through the pack. it's possible this is your problem...and this might be your opportunity to do that lift you've always wanted...
