1999 528i, The buttons for programming the garage door code have no instructions in the owners or bentley manual. How do you program them?

Here's the short version of the programming process.
BEFORE you start, decide if you want to program one button only or multiple (2-3) buttons. If you will be programming more than one you should have the remote transmitters all ready; you will need to do the programming all in one shot - see below for more details.
1. Turn ignition on to the second position
2. Hold down the two outside buttons on the BMW Universal Transmitter (BMW-UT) until the indicator light begins to flash (20-30 seconds). Then release the buttons. This procedure initializes the memory and erases any previous settings on all three channels.
With the light flashing the BMW-UT is ready to be programmed.
3. Hold your hand-held transmitter against the front surface of the BMW Univ. Trans. (meaning away from the windshield), hold so you can still see the indicator light.
4. Now activate your portable transmitter and simultaneously push the desired button on the BMW-UT. Keep holding both your portable transmitter and the BMW-UT button. The indicator light will flash, first slowly, then rapidly. Once you see the rapid flash your programming is complete and you should release the buttons.
5. To program another function in the BMW-UT repeat steps 3,4
If your garage door opener uses a rolling code the instructions will be slightly different. If you want those instructions let me know and I will include.
hope this helps.
