Advice on 1999 Z-28

Hey y'all, I'm looking for some advice. I've got a 95 base model camaro that has gone through it's second clutch. I've decided to put her out to pasture. I'm looking at a 1999 Z-28 with pretty low miles (36,000). I LOVE my old camaro and LOVE the camaro in general---that's what my heart says. But my head is pointing out all the trouble I had with my 95...replaced water pump twice, alternator, driveshaft, clutch, etc... It was always in the shop and it was never cheap.

Bottom line, I'd love to have another camaro (especially one with more power) but I don't want to be shelling out for repairs every other month.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Wow 2 water pumps?! How many miles is on your 95? I also have a 95 and have replaced the same parts. As for the 99z28 i would say you should be trouble free for quite some time since it is a low mile car and also you are dealing with a totally new engine, the ls1 not the lt1 in your 95. Any sports car is going to be somewhat expensive when it comes to repairs but you have to pay more for performance. To sum it all up going with a low mile camaro is a good first choice, 2nd if you want performance and the camaro thrill you are going to have to pay for it sooner or later but good maintenance will help keep the repair bill low.

Should have known better than to come to camaro fanatics to get talked out of buying one! I thought the engine on the 99 was different but I wasn't sure. My 95 baby (136K) has been alot of trouble and it sucks in the winter but there is nothing like being on a nice curvy stretch of road on a fine day in a camaro and no other cars in sight! Thanks!

welcome to the forums..

Go for it, You wont believe the difference between your 3.4 V6 and the LS1 in the Z28..
And with low miles like that, you should expect to be trouble free for a little while, providing its properly maintained

Is your car paid off? If so, dont get rid of it. If you replace the broken parts with the right parts, you wont have so many problems. Are you preplacing these clutches with stronger clutches? Like Stage II clutch? I just sold my 01 LS1, if it were paid off, I would be barried in that car one day. But I needed to get rid of it, and it was so sad. My advice is to keep the car. Start askign more questions about particular parts when you replace them. Start making freinds with guys that know how to work on cars, so you can learn and save $$ as your learning!

I didnt know it was a V-6! Your insurance is gonna go WAAAY up. Keep your car, for the costs of a LS1 powered car, you can buy a LS1 motor along with other parts. I have a guy down here getting rid of a LS1 motor with 16k miles for 2k!!!

As an owner of a 99Z28, I say if you want the 99, buy it.(If the price is right)The milage is excellent. (36,000) I currently have 107,000 HARD miles ( @ 60 miles at the dragstrip) and have had absolutly zero mechanical failures. The ls1 motor is awsome and highly reliable!

Wrong, the insurance will go up a little but not "waaay up"

that year car and that low mileage, should come with a warrantee, and also purchase an extended warrantee, then you really won't hafta worry about the repair bills.

Thanks y'all. I actually checked the insurance... not too much worse than the 95 5-spd. (sorry guys but I get that gender break on insurance) I go for a test drive tomorrow... I'll keep ya posted.

you say base model camaro i assume its a 6, ive always heard that the v8 cars and the motors themselves held up better than the 6s. my 94 Z just had to have its first new clutch in at 134K.

the perks of bein a girl huh ;)

but i would definatly suggest getting the 99 Z28 over the sixer you have. i was a chevy technition for a while, and can tell you that chevy V6 engines are known to be troublesome, especialy with gasket seals and just about everything related to the cooling system. The LS1 is a completely different story.

I will however warn you in respect to one pricy repair that is known for the LS1 especially with the manual trans. They have a trend of them eating up the factory piston rings and burning oil. I would check this car over to see if that repair has already been done, or if it is showing signs of needing it. I would bring it up to whoever you are buying it from, and see if the car is still covered under warranty in case the repair needs to be done. it costs about 3500 dollars from what i remember. But aside from that, the engines are bullet proof and you shouldnt have any troubles.

and welcome to the forum by the way.
