Fair Price for this work?

I have and exhaust leak, I believe in the square man to comp gasket. From what I have been told by many it is easiest to drop the engine to fix it. Well I took my car to a MR2 specialst who races and builds just mk1's and II's.

The guy who i tend to trust recomends that if I am going to have the work done that I again drop the engine and while it is out, replace he stock cluch (mil. 127K) timing belt, flushed cooling ( has to be done anyway) replace master and slave clutch cylnders, Water pump and seals, you get the picture. I know that if the engine is going to be dropped these should be done. But does the engine really have to be dropped to remove the exhaust manifold.

He is asking 1K just to drop the motor. and another thousand to do everthing after that. Is 2k a good price to do all this work. that really is only being done because the engine is being dropped. not because it has to be dropped or does it. Oh the price also included all fluids, toyota red, and replacing the front left wheel bearing.

What do you all think.

There is not an exhaust leak in this world that you would ever need to drop the engine to fix in the MR2. That is a load of bull.

I would recommend doing your water pump when you do your timing belt (that is common to do). There is no need to fully drop the engine to do a timing belt. I've timing belts done in parking lots already on the MKII Turbo MR2.

I do not recommend replacing your clutch unless it is worn and not working properly.

From what I have seen, unless you are doing work to the actual engine, there is no reason to "Drop it."

i'd been wondering about the timing belt, mines coming up and i don't want to drop the engine, waste of money when i'm gonna replace it later.

Well, He is going to be replacing the hell hose one and two, the master and slave cluch cylynder, the cluch which he recomended doing while the engine was out. all the fluids drained, trani. Replace valve cover gasket, and the distributer shaft seal.

As far as the exhaust leak. He says that I eed to remove the manifold and turbo. and all associated seals. I don't know.

My second qoute was from another guy who knows Mr2 and wanted 500 in labor only to fix the leak. Not droping the engine. then what if he breats a stud off in the head. the engine then needs to come out. wouldn't you say. please heis going to start soon sould I through the brakes on this ordeal and shop.
Also why no clutch change. Again i have 127K it is bound to be due isn't it.

My Opinion.

500 Is A Lot More Realistic Unless You Want To Do The Rest Of The Stuff Anyway, Waste Of Time Otherwise. Actually 500 Might Still Be A Lot For An Exhaust Leek.

If He Breaks It Yeah It Might Have To Come Out... But If It's Gonna Break It'll Probably Break Whatever You Do... Only Way To Avoid It Is Leave The Leak.

The only exhaust leak I could see spending $500 to fix would be a cracked turbo ... lol.

Most exhausts leaks are nothing mroe than burnt out gaskets. Gaskets are cheap ~ real cheap.

See that is the problem. It seems that I am snow balling my self into this huge job that is acually ONLY an exhaust gasket from either the head to man or man to comp. I am getting no boost. COMPLETE boost loss so leaving it is not an op. I am suppling $260 worth of parts that are not included in the 2k. ( all gaskets, and slave and master cylinder, and one wheel bearing.

I will just tell you who it is Vick's Brothers Racing

I trust that they know what they are doing but. Damn.
In your opinion what is fare for the work. The through ot bearing does whine alot. the clutch may need to be replaced anyway.
What do you think.

To replace an exhaust gaslet between the engine and the manifold OR the manifold and the turbine (not the compressor!) is not that much work and the gasket is cheap.

The only other issue would be if your exhaust manifold if warped ... that could be a bigger problem.

The clutch is a whole other deal. I would expect to pay $300 ~ $375 to get clutch job done.
