Hi, my son went to UTI not a bad school ,but they tell you they will find you jobs(Don't belive it ,its BS) but his training was good ,came out ASE certified but had to find his own job, and most of the dealers didn't care if he went to school or not,as long as he knew how to do the job, good luck

LMAO public! My school here in VA (Old Dominion University) is actually offering a racing degree type thing next year. Its a 4 year degree with 2 in the classroom and two at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) We'll be working with VA tech on different aspects of the car. If I'm not mistaking were going to have courses on drivetrain and aero (NASA Langley windtunnel is about 30 min down the road, we work with them). VA Tech will be taking suspension and something else (sorry, can't remember). Just FYI

Are the first 2 years just engineering fundamentals? Are you going to enroll in the program, that is what are you studying?

I believe so alastor. I don't know the exact details of it but I will tell you what I do know. We have several race tracks in our area. (Soon to be another road course 15min south of richmond called dragons ridge) ODU has serveral teams, we have a Legends team which use a 1250CC 4 cylinder yamaha motor, un-restricted. The motor cannot be modified as well as the frame, as such the key to success would be in the suspension setup. We also have a baja team which use an unmodified 10hp briggs motor on a fully designed off road vehicle. The team I'm mostly involved with is the Formula SAE team which use a restricted (20mm) up to 610cc motor on a fully designed open wheel car. We currently use a 600cc out of a Suzuki GSXR in which we are allowed to modify any way we please. We design and fabricate our own frame, suspension, and drivetrain just like the baja team, except we will see around 80hp and higher speeds. I personally am going to continue on my ME (mechanical engineering) degree or may be switch to MET (mechanical engineering and technology) I believe money is really in the stress analysis of structures on vehicles. The motorsports degree would be fun, but I would rather work on my own race car than someone elses. :) .

Some other teams that were easy for me to get involved with here are a arena racing/midget car team, a late model series car/team, and a craftsman truck series team. Some benefits that I recieve from my affiliation to ODU include; free races at American Indoor Karting, waived entry fee at local ODR SCCA events, free trip to michigan once a year to meet some of the big 3's executives. Last year we went up to pontiac michigan (where the competition for the formula SAE is held) and had the oppotunity to see a brand new GT-40 (before they were being produced) have the living crap RAPED out of it. All in all the trip was unbelievably fun and the people I met for future opportunies was amazing.

I would reccommend DKXNY that you also look for schools with an active formula sae team. www.formulasae.org. If you were to jump on a some sort of science degree such as Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Computer Related, as well as so many others. You could also go for a business degree and help the team with the marketing aspect this competition requires. I believe that companies don't necessarily look at the specialty school that you went to, but the real life experience you have. Sorry, I'm babbeling on, but its early, I'm on 2 hours of sleep.... Hope this gives you some more info into some schools!

UTI is an allright school, If you have the grades etc. you can get into a manufacturers training program easy. My buddy went through their BMW program, i had a 3.89 gpa and my counselor was begging me to go to a program, but i chose to transfer to a four year school, Ferris State University, in Michigan. Their associates program (2yrs) is alright but i think there is better opportunities at UTI if you can cut the grades. They also have two 4 year auto programs. Their AET (Automotive Engineering Technology) program is relatively new and needs some bugs worked out, but i think they have the right idea. They also have a management program (Automotive and Heavy Equipment MAnagement) that is also a decent program.
I'm in AET, from my point of view it is a better degree, but they need to get rid of some of the classes and change the material/proffessors of some of the others. But what is really wrong is that it is not as well promoted as the Management degree. This program has been around much longer and there are many more people in the industry who know about it. When we have job fairs, companies come in asking for students in the management program for jobs that clearly need someone with a technical background, not management. Usually when you tell these guys that your in the Automotive engineering program they kind of look at you funny and say, "Whats that, i'm looking for somebody in Automotive management program."

enough venting,

UTI is a good program, it can really help if you have the grades. If you're looking for something more than just wrenching for the rest of your godforsaken life, i would honestly look at a four year program.

Check out www.ferris.edu

there is also kettering????

I would also like to hear more about the program at old dominion. It is kind of making me jelous.

I want to be a TEC, DO you think i can get that from UTI

If you just want to be a TEC (i'm guessing autmotive technician???) yea, you can get it from UTI. If you can cut the grades and have the work ethic, I honestly think UTI is one of the better schools out there due to their relations with manufacturers and the munfacturer programs. Getting into one of these will garauntee a job, but you still have to bust your ass to do well.

Thats nice, I hope he will be very successful in his life. I got accepted to UTI in it's new campus in Exton PA. I don't know any other school thats better. my choices are WYOTECH, OHIO TECHNICAL COLLEGE,UTI, and LINCOLN TECH. I live in New Jersey, thats the school arround here.
and if I go to UTI, I need financial aid, i need lots of it, and housing?!?!?! i need to pay my utilities?!?!? damn $250 plus Utilities bills, thats going to prevent me from going there. Did your son went there and worked parted time???? If so, i wish i can do the same and get the same grades as your son did or better.

Whatever you do don't go to Lincoln Tech. I have friends that went their for auto repair and auto body and all of them say that you don't get the right training and they don't help you find a job and most people end up going somewhere else to finish their training. I live about 20 mins away from their and I've been there many times and talked to people there that are in auto repair and all of them say it isn't worth the big expense for little training.

Yeah thats why it is last on my list. and i do have a friend in Lincoln Tech.. and his finishing in two months and his on his own, He got himself a job in Sears doing oil change and tires right now, its paids $7.50i an hour. its good for now and work your way up, but i think your better off going into a dealer with the money you paid for your training. I already have the 1 year or the 2 year requirements for the ASE CERTIFIED, another year in UTI will do it for me, and hopefully i can get the grades and pay all my expensives, then take the tests and past so i can work in BMW or benz. Those are my top choices, if not then I'll have to see. its a dream for me to work in those two companies
