Red Line???

okay, i have a 5 speed 96 RS. my problem is that when i run the car hard, i swear i can turn in a better time if i shift at 6000 instead of the redline at 7000. this doesnt really make sence to me. and yes, i know its not a race car, but i still think its strange that it doenst accelerate as hard past 6000. im kind of puzzled as to what this could be. if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

the key issue is lenght the 1/4 mile is just to short to red line each gear...you just wont get the fukk poteintial of you gear ratios redlining on a 1/4 mile.

just because a car has a redline of 7000 dosnt mean you should run it to that.it all depends on what rpm you get the most hp and tourqe at. As you upgrade your car with performance parts your optimal shift points will change. I have a gst and I have the same redline as u but i shift at like 6.5k

If you want it to pull all the way up to 7K, you need to change the cam.
You are pushing past the power band before changing gear, there is no need to push it there because the car is designed for smoothness and gas mileage. As you nicely put it yourself "it's not a race car" that is not to say you cannot make it go like one. The throw of the cam (timing of the opening and closing of the valves) determines your RPM to HP ratio, a hot cam will keep the valves open a bit longer to feed the engine past the designed 6k. This is why your car specifications will tell you that your car puts out XXXamount of Horse Power @ 6000rpm and so many foot pounds of Tourque. Pulling power. = excelleration.

second its DOHC , dual over head cams , not cam
cams dont raise your redline that much ,if anything aftermarket springs, rockers and retainers with raise your red line...

well no its really 74-7500 but but if you are running a 2g your high end power sucks 1g pull really hard at the higher rpms. from my experince the 420a is more of a high end power guess just depends on the driver i won most of my races with the rs with the highend. all i had on it was cai and exhaust
