3rd gen brake problem.

my brake pedal hits the floor.I had this problem before and it was because of a busted brake cylinder in the rear left drum.I fixed that and Ive been fine until now.I dont see any fluid loose. My pedal hits the floor now and I dont know why?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 04:28 PM
master cylinder will make the pedal go to the floor.A bad brake booster makes the pedal hard to push.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 04:34 PM
How can I test a master cylinder to see if it is good or bad?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 04:37 PM
if the pedal goes to the floor its bad.if it leaks its bad.
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 04:41 PM
if you bleed the brakes, you will know if its making good pressure or not.if you have sombody pump the brakes up,and hold them down,as you open a bleeder valve,if it doesnt spray out of the bleeder valve, you have a problem in the master cylinder. If you dont bench bleed master cylinders, they might never work right, because the angle they used on install will hold air in the system indefinatly.

Will worn pads and shoes cause the pedal to go to the floor?thanks again hot rod.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 04:50 PM
oh yeah, and my fluid is a tad bit below the capacity. Will that cause the pedal to go to the floor?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 04:52 PM
Not in any case ive seen .Usually if the pads get too worn down,it will cause a leak in the caliper of cylinder, but the master should still have a good feel, cosidering the fluid isnt low.
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 04:54 PM
unless its been ran to the bottom of the reservoir,it shouldnt cause any brake pressure issues.not enough to make it go all the way to the wood.

R master cylinders and boosters connected to each other or are they located sepratly in the vehicle?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 05:10 PM
the back of the master cylinder bolts to the front of the booster.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 05:12 PM
Is it a good idea to replace them both at the same time or is it okay to just install a new master cylinder?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 05:18 PM
You dont have to change them as a set,but if you find the master cylinder has been leaking out of the back into the face of the booster, the booster will likely fail due to the brake fluid destroying the rubber seals on the booster.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 05:32 PM
I just went and checked the master cylinder and booster and dont see any fresh fluid at all.Does a master cylinder have to leak any fluid for it to be bad.My car has been sitting for a few hours now and I also checked the insides of all the tires and dont see any fresh fluid?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 05:52 PM
they can be bad and not leak, wich is usually the case.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 06:23 PM
What if when I bleed the system fluid does squirt out the bleeder valve?I guess that would mean the master cylinder is good?
What could the problem be then?
What could the problem be then?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 06:31 PM
that doesnt mean its good.if your not losing fluid and the pedal goes to the floor, you have either a bleeding problem,or a bad master cylinder
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 06:40 PM
So that means if I have a bleeding problem I should see fresh fluid leaking somewhere right now.
Im pretty confident I dont have a leak anywhere so I think it might be the master cylinder. What do you think?

How many miles can a master cylinder under normal driving conditions before they go bad?
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 07:20 PM
if you have a leak you will see fluid on the ground or on parts .If you have a bleeding problem, that means that air in the brake system exists due to it not being evacuated properly.
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 07:22 PM
mayhaps rebleed the system, and get better results.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 07:32 PM
I see,but the braking system has worked fine for 15000 miles since I last worked on them until now. Will air that was left in there then be a problem now or do you think my master cylinder simply went out?I checked the car again and dont see any leaking brake fluid any where.
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 07:36 PM
yeah its probably wasted. if expence isnt a big deal go ahead and replace the booster too.
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 07:40 PM
I know for a fact that the master cylinder is original,How many miles can a master cylinder take before it goes bad?
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 09:15 PM
Also,i forgot to mention that when I drive I have to pump the brakes in order to stop.It stops if I push it down to the floor once but stops better when I pump it 2 or 3 times. What does that mean.
hotrod_chevyz
12-08-2004, 09:16 PM
same thing
82KnightRider
12-08-2004, 09:18 PM

Can I really be held accountable if my rumblin-ass Flowmasters and air-suckin ram air kit does something to the part of the import owners brain that desires a beatdown to take place? I think not
Now, I'm sure if he had Nitrous or something, I might have gotten beat, but all he had was exhaust, so hopefully I have inspired him to better himself and his rice....er I mean car :)

some little *domestically challenged* cars come off the line like they are going to be all buisness.even if they get a few feet on me,they are usually about to go into third as im coming out of first.ive never had one hang with me thru half of third gear.usually i can have them about rapped out in fifth and im on a sunday drive at like 4000-5000 rpm's.They more often than not find the nearest turn lane, after they hear the comp cam,400 SB heads, and dual cherry bombs.
