Whats wrong with my Explorer?

I have a 1992 4X4 XLT and it was running perfect until the other day when it overheated for the first time. After taking it to a mechanic, they advised me that my water pump had a hole in it and to replace it. I did and 3 days later, after going about 350 miles, my truck then filled with white smoke (which smelled like burning rubber and oil) and started making a clicking sound when I accelerated. I have not driven it sense because I am fearful that it will cause more problems. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? The truck has 166,000 miles on it and is in great shape other than this. I'm just afraid that this is the beginning of a bunch of other issuesd.
Any input would be great, thanks.

Not to jump on this one too quickly, but I think when you overheated your truck you probably burned out the engine. Sounds like you'll have to replace the engine. ouch. But this is only one comment wait for others to have a say. You probably also cracked your heads. Best start phoning around for a replacement engine. I imagine the people in here can help you out with prices so that you don't get taken.

Was it smoke or steam? When the heater core blows, the cab fills up with white steam that reeks of rubber (personal experience).

same thing happined to mine, the cab filled up up with steam.so what i did was a little bypass.it took about ten minutes,so what i did was took the hose that came off the motor and to the core and put it on the water pump, after that no more steam came in,and it stoped runing hot.a new heator core is only about 20$and it under the dash, you can get to it from the passenger side right under the dash.try the bypass and that will let you know if its the heator core or even worse.

oh boy ...... clicking... Your engine may have given up the ghost. With 166k miles I think it safe to say its not really worth fixing it unless its cheap to do. Don't blow a bunch of money on 12 year old vehicles, because you probably will never get out what you put in it. My 94 Explorer is at 130k and believe me I REALLY keep an eye on the fluids-like once a week. That is always the best prevention to keep an eye on what is going on under the hood. Keep us all posted, Good Luck :)

Thanks for all the input, which didn't seem very positive. But I guess I have to expect it with a truck that old. I took it to a local mechanic and was told the bottom radiator hose had popped and needed to be replaced but he is looking at other things because of the clicking sound when I accelerate.
Oh......I'm sorry I didn't clarify before but the smoke didn't fill the cab it engolfed the hood and exhaust. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
I'm hoping its nothing more but I will keep you all updated. Thanks again. :grinyes:

Not to alarm you, but it could be your mechanics fault that you are having the problem with your truck. He most definately removed the bottom radiator hose to fix the water pump, and my guess is that it was not put back on properly and all your antifreeze came out. If I were you I would refuse to pay and bill to fix it because it could possibly be the mechanics fault. You may have blown a head gasket because your engine overheated. Is there any white smoke coming out the exhaust when you start it? If there is that may be part of your problem. Good Luck and keep us all posted :)

well believe it or not mine did the same thing, all i did was put 91 octane in it.your problem could be valve clutter from cheap gas, worst case could be that you need to have the heads reworked.try better gas first

Well, day 4 at the doctors and they are still taking there time looking through every hose and belt. They have determined that the lower radiator hose was broken and fortunatly it didn't do very much damage because it broke not a mile from my house and the mechanics. (I literally had to coast down a hill to the mechanics! :naughty: )
I really liked the octane idea for the solution to the clicking noise and my dad had actually suggested the same thing. I always put plus in her but I'm going to try premium from now on.
Thank you all again for the feedback and I will keep you posted on what seemed to be the culprit to all this chaos! :)

Well, to all those interested.........
I got my truck back and she's better than ever. After a new radiator hose, thermostat, fan belt and a good flushing of both the radiator and heater core, shes never ran better.
I also got a tune up done (which apparently had never been done). I am really releaved that it wasn't anything more and nothing that would cause me to take out a second mortgage! :icon16:
Thank you all for your input, it was greatly appreciated. :smokin:
