Anyone know if I can replace the rear drum's on my 88 without changing the control arms? I havnt ever took of the entire drum assembly or took down a rear disc assembly so I dont know if they use the same type spindle or if the spindle is remeoveable. I'm wanting to keep the control arm because if I replace it I will loose the rear steering, witch I have grown quiet fond of.

Are you taking the Trailing Arms or Lower Control Arms?
The Trailing Arms are what hold the disc assemblys.
You do not need to change the LCA's when changing the TA, the later models are the same mounts only exception is they use a fork style shock and a cast LCA insted of the ball/socket and stamped metal LCA from our much better 88 rear setup!
There was something that Honda did because they thought that US drivers sucked (actually people here were not use to the rear end of FWD cars kicking out like a RWD and the insurance industry killed them). They kept the better 88 LCA in Japan and other markets even through today. I heard that the later model US ITR came with the 'rear steer" LCA, dunno for sure.
BUT, Yes, you can change just the disc and not the whole TA but you have to take the full assembly off, spindle and everything.
There are some tork bolts that you can see if looking from the back of the TA. I think that you have to pull the hub off too, dont remember fully.
A friend did it to save some money at the picknpull.
I bought a 88 just for the same reasons, and they are lighter and dont have the stupid door seatbelts.

woot for the 88!
no seatbelt doors, a lot less weight, and passive rear steering.

88's had passive rear steering and ITR inspired suspension, they handle better than all the other years but the american market freaked when it was introduced and people kept spinning there cars so honda discontinued it for the american market after 88 and I believe its the only car to ever come with it in america. The way the trailing arms are setup they have an additional link that counters the toe of the wheels so when you go around a corner and the suspension starts to react to the forces of the car the extra link forces the tires to point in the opposite direction of the turn resulting in rear stearing. They are more agile than the 89+.

I am mostly sure the trailing arm that was not different, it was the LCA.
Trailing Arms are identical in all the years until later models.
If you know How to drive you can get a 88 to do a good drift.
88's Rock!!!!!

ok am i missing something here? yes u explained the passive rear steering, but wuts this about an extra link??? correct my if i'm wrong, but the rear wheel toe is controlled by the trailing arm compensator. it is at the front end of the trailing arm. is that wut u'r talkin about? i had an 88 dx rex and a 89 Si rex, so i had both styles of rear LCA's and shocks. i never noticed a difference in the LCA's. looked to have the same bushings, mounting points, and links to me. anyone got pics of both? if this really is tru, then i f*ed up swapping off the 88's for the 89's and sending them off to the scrap yard. (89 was totalled) so anyway, yeah if anyone has pics of both, or can paint a pic in my head, so i can see the additional links, that'd be awesome.

I dont know about any additional links.
If anyone could help me on that one, too
My 88 rear looks identical, except for the LCA
The 88 had a stamped metal LCA
Kinda like bent sheet metal (bit thicker)
An open A-design with the shock mounted down in the frame.
The shocks that are used are ball/socket style
Think almost any US made car to visualize those.
The rest are a cast iron part, totally solid
The Shock mount is a two-pronged fork arrangement that straddles the LCA
From what I understood it was the flex in the stamped metal that allowed the “Rear Steer”
The rigid cast iron part didn’t have the flex.

Ok so if we find an 88 with a mashed front end, think we could adapt something like this to an 89+

Weeeee yah 88s do rock. I find myself spinning often at the local autox's I wonder what adding a rear sway bar and a rear biased spring rate would do :naughty:
THey're right though, the spindle is different im pretty sure, I did the disk swap myself and I was thinking the samething before I ripped the whole rear end off my car.

rear swap bars and the passive rear stearing dont mix, it will cause it to iratically snap directions when you corner.
