I have a 97 540 that's low mileage, but I've now read many warnings about the oil pumps coming off their mounts inside the engine. The Bentley manual warns of this, and describes a procedure that requires pulling the engine (!).
Is there any way to test whether there's an issue with the oil pump without pulling the engine and taking it apart? I'd hate to do all this work for nothing

This IS NOT a problem on E39 M60/M62 engines, it did effect a number of earlier E32/E34 M60's however and with the lower sub-pan removed was fairly easy to check for. Kind of the same S38 [E24 & E24's] that did occur on some front crank hubs loosening up.

Wouldn't be so sure. I did a bunch of research on this and there are definitely issues with the m60/62 engines oil pumps loosening. Someone at roadfly gave me the following

going to do this next time I change the oil
