air fuel sensor 2001 4runner

I had the old "check engine light" come on and stay on. Code was P1135. Upon diagnosis at the dealer, malfunction determined to be LB1/51 - Air Fuel Sensor Heater Circuit. Service writer says A/F sensor needs to be replaced and wants 2-hrs labor to do it. I looked up this part and found it gets used as an O2 sensor on other Toyotas, so it has to be in the exhaust stream. Shouldn't this be an easy replacement like a normal O2 sensor would be? I normally do some of my own car repairs, but have not yet looked to see where this sensor is. Can anyone help?

Also, is there a way to reset the check engine light without going to a dealer?

Sure enough, the air fuel ratio sensor looks fairly easy to get to. Maybe 15 minutes to replace, not the 2 hours the dealer quoted. Am I missing something here?

Once I replace it, I'll need to reset the check engine light. Is there a way to reset the check engine light without going to a dealer?

With the ignition turned off, remove the EFI fuse (15A) for 20 seconds before replacing it. This should clear the codes in the ECM memory and reset the check engine light.

Good point. I was going to tell him to just unhook the battery, but if you do the EFI fuse you don't have to worry about losing your radio station presets.

I replaced the air/fuel sensor today and it really took only about 15 minutes. The service writer must think we are all stupid to ask for two hours labor for this job. I will give the tecnician credit though. He got the diagnosis right. At least there is some trustworthy at this dealer.

Thanks, Brian R., for the input on resetting the "check engine" light. Removing the EFI fuse did the trick. On my 2001 4Runner, it is a 20 amp fuse.
