I looked up the specs on my 95 bird, and it's 265 ft lbs is @ 3200RPMs. Everytime i accelerate, whether it's doing over 50 mph, or flooring it at a stop, i always feel thrust @ the 3200rpm. It feels as if the torque launches the car at that rpm. Now, heres where i'm confused..
Why is it, that i can accelerate faster if i don't floor it..? By this i mean that from a stop, if i hit the pedal to half way-creeping the rpm's to the 3200rpm mark, then flooring it gives better results then just flooring it basically.
Is that the torque converter giving more torque at the 3200rpm mark (which is still in 1st gear btw). If i floor it, it goes through 1st and 2nd faster-giving less push so to speak. But if i get on it slow, then floor it-it stays in 1st gear much longer rather than flooring it..
I don't mean to sound like some young punk, asking questions while it seams i'm killing my car-this question has got me tricked for a while. Thanks.

I still don't understand. Just did alittle reading, and it said something about multiplying (toque converter) the power so the engine has a higher rpm, being in a lower gear.

Well the reason you feel surge of power at 3200 RPM is because of the torque curve your engine produces. Most cars do not have a linear torque curve, they usually build up to a peak amout of torque at a certain RPM (in your case 3200) and after that slowly drop off.
As far as acceleration goes, usually when you floor it from a stop you either get wheel spin, which will slow you down and your torque converter will *slip more so you dont destroy your transmission. Hope that helps... happy driving.

I believe i'm staying in first gear longer when i DONT floor it.

With auto, if you floor it, then it usually stays in each gear longer(even if the torque curve specifies that it is best at the 3200rpm)..
