99 intake manifold differences

My wife's 1999 escort just blew a valve or something. I haven't got the head off yet, but there is something wrong with the intake valve and bits of metal in the cylinder. Anyway, I'm buying a new/used engine for $750 as opposed to a new head for $700. The wrecking yard said if my intake manifold had the sticker marked "F8CE-CA" it would be a direct replacement, if not I'd have to swap intake manifolds. My intake is labled F8CE-DD" Anyone know the difference? Thanks,
75000 miles and blown.

The first year of the 2.0 SPI, 97 has a return fuel line fuel rail. Some of the vacume lines might be different also. Should'nt be a big deal, it would be a good idea to put on some new intake manifold gaskets any ways.
I bet you dropped a valve seat, it happens to these motor's if they get too hot.

have fun replacing that manifold....When replacing my gaskets, I had to remove ALL the EGR and Emissions control stuff from the firewall to get enough room to get everything off the studs. It's pretty straight forward, time consuming, and make sure the engine is COLD when you do it....otherwise it kinda burns....

thanks for the replies. here is the update.

Turns out now that the engine I paid for today will be a direct replacement after all. I'll find out for sure when I try to drop it in. Here is the kicker, it's out of a '98 and has less than 20,000 miles. This is my first engine swap on a front wheel drive, so I'll post the results and tell all if it was difficult or not. The guy at the yard pulled it in an hour but the tranny was already gone.

To answer your original question the F8CE-CA is a low emission california rated engine. The other is the standard engine. They are direct replacements for one another although you may find some problems with the sensors and computer if you were doing the swap the other way around. In your case there should be no issues.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had a feeling it had something to do with California emissons.

So I have the same dilemma with my 98 with 125K. I can get a "new" engine for $500 with 51K on it, or rebuild my totally trashed engine (that valve seat can do some NASTY stuff!). I'm leaning toward the junkyard engine.

How bad was the swap? There's nothing I *can't* do, but lots I don't *want* to do. Does the tranny need to be pulled as well? What did you do for an engine hoist?

Thanks for any thoughts...

Your better off with paying $500 for a used low milaged motor then paying thousands for a reman/rebuilt motor.

It is possible to just pull the motor, or at least it is with 2ng gen escort that are mostly the same as 3rd gens. You'll have to remove the front and both side motor mounts, that should give you enough room to get the clutch pressure plate past the bell housing.

Make sure the cooling system, including the heater core is clean.

I have a 99 2.0 sohc auto that dumped the valve seats also. and all I am finding localy are late model second gen 1.9's and some late 90's 2.0 dohc are either of these possible.

No! Try searching car-part.com, you can search wrecking yards throughout the country. Only the SOHC for the split port injection will work properly.
